What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

There may be some who believe that an Old Cutler Barlow does not really belong in this thread . You may be correct , but I believe that the re-covering of the Stag on this one makes it one that does belong here . I have posted it in a couple of other threads and you may now know that I was gifted this absolutely beautiful Barlow by Paul Hilborn .

Very nice. The late Robert A. Paolantonio (of the Colonial Paolantonio's) made those Old Cutler knives with parts sourced from Camillus. All the ones I've seen are very nice!

Thank you for the very kind words Tomboy . Is your blade Stainless or Carbon ??? It looks like it has a Patina on it . Do you have some idea of the age of ours ???? BTW : There is nothing wrong with your Stag either .

Harry

I got mine from an ebay auction in which the seller specified it was a 1990s era Henckels made by Boker after Henckels started contracting out their manufacturing. Generally, I take anything sellers say with a grain of salt, but that sounds about right in my very amateur opinion. The blade etch looks like that on other Boker made Henckels knives. I exchanged messages with the seller about other knives and he seemed to know his stuff, plus I thought it novel and admirable that he stated straight up in the auction that it was made by Boker when many sellers either don't know or don't want to admit it since older knives are often more desirable.

Mine's stainless like yours; just bad lighting and a mediocre camera. I was hoping the red twins on the bolster meant it was carbon steel since that's what a red shield means on other Boker made Henckels knives, but apparently not the case for the barlows.

PS: Happy Thanksgiving to anyone out there celebrating the holiday!

Nice Sheepfoot, Ryan. Very white. I remember some were yellow and mottled. Each has its charm of course!!

Harry, it absolutely belongs here, go back to the very first post in this wonderful thread and see the wide variety of Barlows Charlie posted. The Old Cutlers are well made traditional Barlows, nice gift from Paul.

Few pics of Barlows ranging from good inexpensive users to the pricier higher end collectable Barlows, couple of Old Cutlers, couple of Craftsman's with a TC and Robeson by Queen thrown in. IMG_4287.jpgIMG_3476.jpg IMG_2991.jpgIMG_6488.jpg

Happy Thanksgiving buddy, have a good one.

Thanks a lot@Augie !!!! I also think any Old Cutlers belong here because they are part of the history and I have tried to buy one for my little collection but they wanted too much for it . I even have a Colonial or 3 also .
We are headed down the road for about 50 miles to a Daughter's place for Thanksgiving . First time in aver 25 years that Thanksgiving is not at our house . We hope that you and yours also have a great Thanksgiving my friend .
