What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Newest addition, thrilled to finally have one, and a fine example at that. "It wasn't me..."

My barlows to date:

I have been an avid knife collector for years now, but mostly focused on modern knives. About a year back I got bitten by the GEC bug and never looked back. A few months ago I stumbled upon the 'Barlow' and fell in love. Since, I've been lucky enough to aquire a handful of the 77 frame and now I'm hunting for other frames as well. I finally pulled the trigger on the new ancient barlow and it is incredible. I can't wait to put it to use, it is begging for it.

I do have a question regarding the ancient. I noticed that the swedge grind at the top is slightly different on one side vs the other. At first I thought it was part of the 'unfinished' charm, but the swedge is ground similarly in every photo of this model that I've been able to find. The mark side of the swedge gets very skinny as it dives toward the tip while the pile side's swedge stays much thicker to the tip. Hard to capture in photos, but I did my best. Is there some sort of advantage to this? Just looking to gain some knowledge. Cheers!

Mine is the same, BB. The swedge is slightly wider on the pile side. It also ends more abruptly at the tang. It's all in keeping with the "cobby" look we were trying to achieve. Some of the bolsters are downright scary in their "gnarliness"!!

Thanks for the response sir! Keeping with the "cobby" look was my first thought, but I got curious when I realized how consistent it was. GEC is consistent with their quality even when trying to beat the knives up! :D

Here's an idea for the next Ancient Charlie, rough assembled, handles not fit, blade rough grind, betcha it will sell:D
That's so scary, you'd have to keep it in your pocket so you could sneak up on a glass of water to get a drink ;)

After some very serious and in depth searching today, (actually the whole of this past week) I was able to score this Ancient Barlow!
Should be in my grubby little hands next week!
Is there a number on the bottom of each tube?? o_O
