What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Let's see, I have an old Remington barlow rehandled in green bone, an old Camillus 9 daddy barlow, a Queen Dan Burke daddy barlow, a Queen Dan Burke small barlow, a Queen made Robeson small barlow, and last but not least 5 Charlows. Two ebony single blade spear points, one antique yellow bone two blade spear, one ebony pile side 2 blade spear, one antique bone clip. I never thought for a minute that a company could make a better barlow than my Queen Dan Burke small. Then I was confident that no one could make a better barlow than my old Remington barlow.

C'mon, I double dog dare ya to make a better barlow than my Charlow!

A wonderful evolution of a Barlow collection, Dan!!
I especially like the last sentence!! Something Huck Finn would say!!:D

There will be some Ebony, two sawcut bone colors, and possibly some black walnut.
My father had a couple of walnut gunstock blanks in his closet from the 1950s. My brother gave me one of them, and I of course immediately thought "knife Handles"!
We are just looking at it to see how it finishes up.

What about the bolsters? Nickel silver, or carbon steel?

Aaron, they will have the same steel TC bolsters, same steel liners, and carbon steel blades and springs.

Hey Charlie, how serious is this thought about Grand - daddy's?

It is just idle chatter, Duncan. I don't think Bill has immediate plans to do one. Surely not this year anyway.
But I do think sometime in future years, Daddy Barlows and similarly-sized English Jacks will make an appearance.

I like the sound of that. I don't need a 5" version, but something in the 4" to 4-1/2 range would be great.

I'm curious, has anyone ever seen a lockback Barlow?

Yep, I just bought one at Blade today. A.G. Russell lock back Barlow. It's imported so it was very inexpensive, but the build quality is nice.
Also picked up a very cool Canal Street Barlow prototype, a used ebony TC "Charlow" and a couple of inexpensive Utica double blade Barlows.
It was a good day and all for less than one Chris Reeve Sebenza.... Haha.

Hmmm... I wonder if we might ever see a lockback Charlow!

Gotta admit that would be cool. The used Charlow I bought today is really, really nice. They had 3 and I should have picked them all up but I was working under a wife-imposed budget... :-)

I put my first edge on my Red bone Charlow ( Clip point ) and to be honest I really love that knife so much I was a bit scared, in the past I have had two GECS that I have had a wee bit of trouble getting a nice sharp edge on, but my others have sharpened up wickedly, anyway..... I went to my friends farm and we were walking through a section where they have planted out in massive proportions all sorts of trees and plants - this farm is just stunning ( I left my Camera at the house unfortunately my friends - otherwise I would have loved to share the beautiful views with you )...we did a wee bit of cutting restrainers away frim the newly formed trunks of trees etc with this knife....
it sharpened up just beautifully, and so too does my Spear point Charlow - just joys to use and carry.

Someone is going to get a absolutely stunning letter here by the looks Sarah!

Glad you are having luck with the blades, Duncan. I have used two TC Barlows so far, and both sharpen up easily and well!
Old Boiley soldiers on, and I also carried a Clip (Boiley II) for a while, but an old friend talked me out of it!
They are treating that 1095 right IMO!!

Nothing other than I just like posting pictures of my favorite knife :p It was a really misty day and I thought the tiny droplets looked neat on the knife :)
