What Makes a Good, Traditional Barlow?

Another of your great pics, Paul. Refreshing on this hot day!!

I bet you could use some of that coolness sometimes, in the Great, Hot State of Texas, eh Sheila??!!

Yep, Paul keeps a tidy lawn there for sure!
I was taking some shots of some other knives to go in the Elusive thread, and I wanted to put up the comparison shot of my two of my Charlows, I just put a nice edge on the Clip point - Whew...its sharp, and ready to go!..

Our very good friend Paul used the word Favourite - you can see why in his beautiful photos, here is mine out of all my Charlows...this knife is just a Stunner...

That beautiful Spey Blade Barlow that you showed us Charlie, now THAT is a absolute beautiful knife, it reminds me when Sue bought a box of second hand knives...now this lady doesn't know a thing about knives, and this knife was one of them...forgive me Charlie as its not a Barlow, but it opened the doors of my mind to appreciate a different main-bladed knife, this knife wouldn't even open, after lots of attention and Mineral Oil, this knife opens and closes like new, and although it still carries oversharpening marks -but not coarse or heavy, and this knife sharpens Scapel sharp!...I can see why you had that knife almost as a Grail knife Charlie, because I am going to have to get a spey Barlow when they come out!!

That's a cool knife, Duncan! What are the markings on the blade??
Can you do a square-on pic for me? I would love to see the untilted profile!!

Am I the only one who would go absolutely bonkers if a version of THIS Charlow came out in a Granddaddy size!!!
We can have a going-bonkers-party, I'll bring the chips!
...and a cake with a dancer inside, if the Granddaddy has a sheepsfoot! ;)

Just a couple pics of the AG Russell with lock back. Hard to beat for the money. Will post pics of the others I snagged at Blade this weekend as soon as I can..

Charlie, last night I couldn't help myself.

I was microwaving some leftovers, and reached into the cabinet under the counter for some Saran-wrap... There it was... staring me square in the eyes... a big bottle of white vinegar........ "Put me into a little mug," it murmured. "Heat me up. Go ahead, you know you want to."
Then, the roll of paper towels whispered into my other ear. "Do it. I can help. It will be easy, I promise."
As if in a daze, I reached for a small ceramic tea cup. Automatically, my limbs executed the requisite movements, and the next thing I knew... "DINGGGG" cried the microwave! "HISSSSSSS" said the vinegar... Dip dip dip, wrap in a towel... Now, we wait.

Entering the great hall, with a grimace upon her visage, the Queen exclaimed "What is that SMELL??"
"Uhm, your highness, I... it..." stammered the hapless knave, knowing the gig was up.
"Enough! Off with your head!!!"

Looks like your Ol' Boiley has a distant cousin, now.
My results aren't as dramatic as yours, so maybe a second-cousin.
Couldn't nab any pics, as it was dark, but maybe I'll give it a second bath to even things out, and then snap a few shots later on.

I'm so ashamed..... ;)

That looks like an oldie, Duncan. Pre-1891 maybe??
Really interesting - thanks for the pic!!

Alex, I recognize the Call of the Vinegar! You can't fight it - don't even try!

Can't wait to see your results!!:)

C'mon guys, you gotta take care not to offend SWMBO. When conducting stinky, boiley experiments take it to the garage.

I have to admit that I've been exiled there a few times...hahaha.

haha good one guys, I too had a near disaster when boiling, I heated up some Cider Vinegar in a cup-but over heated it...put in my knife and I almost had a very nasty flare up-as the other guys warned me here-don't over heat the Vinegar.
boileys - lol I love that name, make me chuckle every time ol' Boiley is mentioned.

C'mon Alex-show us the results kind Sir!

Thanks for the kind words on the knife Charlie, she's a beaut, and quite possibly around that era, I carry it regularly!

Enjoying my Macassar Ebony 2 Blade Charlow yesterday and today...
