I put a lot of stock in the "bang for the buck" theory as well. I "limit" my knife funds pretty stickly, so value means alot to me. That said, there a many fine custom and semi-custom blades out there that I would love to have but don't make sense for me right now.
My current favorites fall into four "need" groups that I buy pretty regularly -
Dress EDC - small, good quality slipjoints - Case Stag, Boker, etc. Gotta be around 3" and <1.5 oz. I love to carry these little knives and have a Case MiniCopperhead in my pocket right now. SAK's are great but tend to be a little bulky for my taste.
Small Tactical EDC (folder) - I don't have a need for a large folding tactical knife, but I really like mid-sized Benchmade's (Blue Class) & Spyderco's. Lots of variety in choices and good quality - generally. I've got a BM 440 clipped inside my waistline right now. Chris Reeve Knives and William Henry's are excellent, but IMO you have to want really want one to validate the extra $ or so for (what I view) as a relatively small gain in quality for user knives. If you are going for a collectable tho, that's another story.....
Truck tools/knives - I carry a Leatherman (Surge) in the truck and am targeting a HEST or RC-3mil as a companion. Don't care too much for the Gerber and SOG Multitools, but that's just me. These aren't for EDC unless you're on a jobsite or in the woods.
Camping/Hunting - RAT Cutlery baby! Got a 6 and an Izula. Want a 4 and an RC-10 (November?). I knew I made the right decision not buying the RTAK from Ontario. Would love to get a Busse(kin), a TOPS, or a Ferhman, but as I said, they're not in the budget right now. Need to get the kids graduated first.....
