I thought maybe we could try this again.

This is not a serious thread about a 2016 forum knife. There will be no voting. There will be no planning. This is just a thread for people to say what kind of traditional knife they would most like to see as a Traditional Forum Blade Forums 2016 knife.

There is no guarantee that there will be a 2016 knife, and this is not the place to make plans for one, or to brainstorm strategies, or to demand a knife. I like to hear about patterns that people like. I learn a lot about traditional knives that way. The idea here is to have fun sharing pattern ideas, in the spirit of "wouldn't it be cool if we could buy this knife."

I closed the previous thread on this topic because the conversation kept going off topic, no matter how many times members and moderators repeated that it is too early to start any serious discussion. So this time, if people can't stick to the topic of different patterns I will report off topic posts.

So let's keep the talk on the topic of patterns.

If you need more reasons to keep the conversation on patterns, here are some Moderator quotes from the last thread:

To the best of my knowledge there has been no discussion about if or how a 2016 knife might happen.

In other words it's way too early to start a serious discussion. I'm sure Frank will weigh in later also.

►The rights to the name "BladeForums" belong to the owner of the site. So his permission to use it has to be obtained each year. Part of the requirement is that the forum knife is required to be strictly non-profit. And the owner needs to be satisfied that no problems can arise that would reflect poorly on BF or that might cause someone to try to sue him.
►If a dealer were to step up to do this, he won't make any money, so he'd be making a sizable donation of time and energy. Taking and tracking orders, tracking the knives, making sure all orders are filled. That is a HUGE job.
►If a dealer were not handling it, then some method of taking orders, tracking the knives, and getting the knives shipped would have to be found. I don't know about any of you folks, but my bank account will not handle that sort of complexity.
►If memory serves, last year we sold 300 knives at about ~$80 ea. Being responsible for $24,000 is no little thing. If something goes wrong, somebody could be out a whole lot of money. Let me say here and now that neither Gary nor I are able to shoulder that sort of burden. So there is that issue to worry about as well. If an established dealer were not involved, then some method would need to be found of guaranteeing the money is secure.
There's other issues, but that'll do for now.

SO

If you want to make this an idea thread for knives, that sounds fun.
Coming up with schemes for how this will work, not so much.
Assuming this will happen this year might be a longish shot. Maybe. Maybe not.
And pushing for anything to happen right away, well, it ain't happening right away.

So let's keep it fun, and to start off, my dream pattern for this year is the same as my dream pattern for last year, a whaler:

I just love this pattern, and thing it is cool as heck. Obviously, even if there were a forum knife in the works, a scrimshaw version would be prohibitively expensive, but this is my fantasy here.

In that same vein,

I also love the idea of a sailor knife with a spike:

It's a cool traditional pattern, plus it is actually quite useful if you are doing anything that requires working with a lot of knots.

And finally, just because I think it is a neat pattern, the Texas sized camp knife:

This pattern has the advantage of being at least partly Charlie's fault ;) Plus it is a useful pattern for camping. I am partial to scout and camp type knives, and this seems like one that would actually fit my hand. If you want to know more about this pattern, you can check out the thread here.

What patterns would you like to see?

I like the idea of a New England Whaler, a big Sheepsfoot with swedge and long pull, on a swayback frame, maybe GEC’s 47 frame, ebony covers, rat-tail bolsters, and a lanyard tube. I think it’d look great

I'm always going to want a Barlow, first and foremost. :o :D

Realistically, I think the Texas camp knife is a great idea, that would probably be my second choice. I like the idea of the rope knife/marlin spike, although it might not have the kind of draw a more general-use traditional would. The same issue comes up with the whaler, though my affinity for sunfishes speaks to the appeal of a big honkin' broad blade like that.

Has there ever been discussion of a tuxedo pattern BF knife? :p

My three pics
A sailors knofe at number one
A peanut at number two in honor of Jackknife and his stories
A whalers because they looks pretty cool pattern

I was initially thinking of that as a Whaler/Sunfish type with a huge fat sheepsfoot... Which is a fun image, but I feel like it would be an awkward knife :D

I would love to see our forum knife be a GEC #48 with regular clip main (not the muskrat clip) and a sheepfoot secondary (not a coping or Wharncliffe). The sheepfoot on the #53 stockman would be perfect, but would need the nick moved to the pile side. A wraparound spring would be nice for the sheepfoot, too. And make it in both 1095 and 440C in jigged bone.

Like the idea of the sailors knife with spike, would be a great camping knife too. Good stainless blade of course as it's meant to be around water.

:)

Something between these two is what I picture! :D

A 3 3/4" equal end with opposing blades, one a wharncliffe, the other a spear. Two springs so the blades can be full length. Jigged bone handles.

I'd like to see Charlie say, this is the knife you're getting ;-))))

I second that 100%!!!!

But if that doesn't happen, I'd like to see a possible 2016 Blade Forum Knife be provided in the "Serpentine Stockman" frame OR the "Sowbelly" frame. 3 3/4" closed length or 4" closed length for either one.

However unlikely, something akin to a Lanny's clip would get my vote.

That's pretty funny! The reality is, I'd still be in for a couple just because it's the forum knife!!

But, since we're dreaming here:rolleyes:....this is what I sketched up last year. Gunstock with a combo punch/cap lifter. I still like the idea.

I know I already said above I would like a smaller knife...but somthing unique like a sailer knife would be nice too!

I really like the gunstock with the spear and punch...no cap lifter! Lol.

That or a single blade 15 Barlow with a nicely scripted BF stamped on the bolster. Simple, classic and it would appeal to many.
