What purposes does your knives do for you?

And as for me, I've carried a pocket knife pretty much every day for decades.
I've never considered it a weapon. It's always been a handy tool in my pocket.
You don't have to be a hunter to need a knife.

♦ As a young man, I sometimes used it to scrape carbon off spark plugs so I could run the old ones for a bit longer.
♦ As a lab tech, I often used it in the lab, when a razor blade was not right for the job.
♦ As an urban home owner, I use one to aid in the small repairs that owners of older houses often have to make. From opening packages, to trimming twine, to trimming flash from plastic parts prior to installation.

I recognize that there are some folks who carry a knife as a weapon. I've just never been one of them.

Certain knives are made to be tactical. A punching knife wasn't made to cut tape, cardboard and fruits. It was a tool designed for self defense.

Serious question here...
Why do you think you need a knife for self defense?

Same premise someone wants a gun in their house for self defense.

I'd rather have it and never need it then need it and not have it.

But I been learning a lot about self defense too. I had a gun pulled on me a few years back. A illegal gun.

I carry knives to cut, i.e., slice, pierce, flay, fillet, whatever I need to cut.

Over 400 of my knives were designed and made for use as a weapon, either primarily or secondarily. The other 3400+ knives I have could be used as a weapon if absolutely necessary. Even with all that, I never carry a knife for use as a weapon under any circumstance.

When I purposefully carry a weapon, it is an M1911, a .357, a 9mm, a 5.56, a .223, a 410, a 12ga, hell, even a .22LR. Never a knife.

If I am in a situation such that a firearm is not required, then my 1-1/4" walking stick will be sufficient. If the walking stick is inadequate for the situation, I won't be stopping at the intermediate step of a knife.

Soooo, if someone pulls a gun on you, legal or illegal, you're going to pull a knife?

My knifes purposed does things it cuts.

That's my plan for using a knife in self defense. If a bad guy is approaching me, I'll run up and shove a couple of SAK Classics into his pockets and then just stand back and watch while they wreak their mayhem on him.

:D

Ahh ok.
As long as you're not planning on using one unless it's absolutely necessary, I'll respect that.
Too many folks use knives or guns as intimidation or an easy way out.
Knife laws suck in nearly every state because of that.

Depends. Knife fights do win against guns. My accuracy with throwing knives and ninja stars is pretty lethal.

I mean imagine shooting darts with someones who keeps hitting bullseye. You're going to assume his accuracy at throwing a dart is pretty high just as you would someone shooting a target at target practice.

The guy who pulled the gun on me got luckly that night. He got beat up in front of people for instigating a fight that he wanted and would not give up. When he lost said fight he went and got a gun. I was very close to disarming him with no weapon of my own. I didn't want to get shot on accident in front of my mom is only reason I gave up lol

I'll use my knife for whatever need arises.

I use mine in my ninjutsu practice. Being a ninja is hard work, but somebody has to keep the mall safe. I also take turns fondling my many different precious-sss, with the door closed of course.

Some of the Indian fights up here written about in fur trade post journals were horrific, particularly after the rum kegs came out. I remember reading that it was common practice for them to have their knives tied to their wrists by a short leather thong. I doubt that they viewed their knives as tools, as I never read about one of them tying a cooking kettle to their wrists.

Even if you don't view the knife as a weapon but only a tool that cancels it self out as per English defention of a weapon is a tool designed to inflict damage to others.

A tool is a device used to perfrom certain actions. So that makes a gun a tool or a weapon. A weapon is a tool.

In my area and in the "bad parts of town", if you pull a knife on somebody in self defense, you can bet they have a gun on them too. That's the problem. Knife fights are messy and nobody usually wins unless you are a ninja expert.

OK. I have had enough of this nonsense.

That is the stupidest set of statements I have ever read on these forums.
