What roughing belt

I just got my Blaze order from Pops and used to 50 to flat grind a hardened 180mm AEB-L petty/utility down most of the way. Worked pretty nice with no real overheating issues. Haven't checked the platen for gunk yet. :D Later, I will do a comparo on a similar knife using a 60+ 984.

Look forward to your results. About to order my pops order for my AEBL and D2 blades.

I think I sa some of the black gunk one time. Maybe a old belt? I know when I was starting I had a bunch of the brown cubitrons and found the blaze to be much better. I just found a old cubi stashed so I will try them back to back. The yellow fell special but then it might be that they look cool and at over $10 I just "know" they are better. I remember I was was saving one just for nice grinds. It still had plenty of wear left on it and it was cutting pretty nice. Then I tossed on a new VSM just to see how much better the yellow belt was and realized that the new belt was much better. I think its really hard to beat the precision of a sharp belt.

Does anyone have any thing to share on how these belts/grinders compare to higher tensioning? I notice vast improvement in belt life and speed with my 60lb spring as opposed to the 20lb I used to have but is this going to have a negative impact on the motor and other bearings over the long run?

I run a 100lb spring on my grinder, although the motor shaft isn't seeing a full 100lbs, nor will yours see the full 60 lbs. I imagine the belts would be close to breaking before you'd start to see a measurable effect on the motor or bearings.

My initial impression today was that the backing on the 50 Blaze seemed a bit stiffer than on the 60 and 80 984's but the seam didn't look quite as well done. As I haven't bought 36 grit belts in either brand this time, I am not having the problem of projectile grit initially.
Look forward to your results. About to order my pops order for my AEBL and D2 blades.
