Some weeks ago, our nice wine corkscrew with the arms broke. The only other corkscrews we have are on my wife's Climber and two of my SAKs, a Swisschamp and a Sportsman II. In the past, on the seldom occasion we needed a corkscrew other than a dedicated one, I usually reach for hers, but this time I got the notion to try out the SpII, which up to then had been in its package unopened. Years ago, I had bought it for the sole reason it was on a post holiday clearance sale. Otherwise, I was not interested in 84 mm SAKs, but at $7 each, I both both they had, gave one away as a present, and tossed the other into the drawer for a future gift or sale. But now I was curious how well it would perform as a cork puller, so I unpacked it and applied the corkscrew. Worked just fine.
Now that the sample was a user, I pocketed it to explore its potential with other chores. I must admit, it does very well, comparable to it's bigger brethren and to my surprise, much easier to carry than the Tinker. I hadn't thought that the small difference in size would have make that much of a difference, but it does. I like my Tinker, but in a pocket, you know it's there. OTOH, the SpII disappears. It even fits into my 5th pocket.
So at this time, a $7 Sportsman II is my EDC SAK. Go figure.
