This mountain lion was said to be shot near Stover, MO. The story went that the shooter was going deer hunting when he heard his neighbors cows making noise. He discovered this cat attacking some calves. He shot and reportedly the cat jumped eight feet into the air, ran about 100 yards and died. The man in the picture is over 6 feet tall and the cat weighed over 200 pounds. The story has now been brought out as a hoax. We got a report from someone that knows the man in the photo and he knows this cougar was shot in Washington state.
Just goes to show you you can not believe all the cougar stories that are cropping up in the midwest.......even with photos!

It is a nice photo though. Wow what a big kitty!

I'd rather pull a gun than a knife on that thing, even if it was on top of me. Shit... probably wouldn't have a chance to do either.

Good news is, statistically if you're attacked by a mountain lion, it will be a 2-year-old who is newly on it's own and hasn't yet figured out how to hunt as well as it ought to. So a cat that attacks you will probably be a LOT smaller than that one.

Probably.

But, please, continue those long solo trail runs through cougar country. I always like reading the scary news stories about a skinny long distant runner attacked and et by man-eating cat. :D

I know a Chinese restaurant that could do wonders with a cat that big :D:p.

kidding of course :)

I love how the guy is bending backwards and has his knees bent as well.

Yeah, my golden retreiver would take that sucker to town!!!

It is unofficially scored as #7 in the Boone and Crockett records now. Wildlife populations have to be regulated, like it or not. Even the large predators like this one. Hunters are the only ones paying for habitat, research and enforcement. And the only ones helping keep the population levels at sustainable levels as determined by state and federal biologists. I like all types of wildlife. Seven deer so far this year. The herd here still needs more thinning.

You'd better believe that my 95lb german shepherd will keep that cats attention while I figure something out. Theres a world of difference between that cat and a dog squaring off and me and my pooch surviving an attack.

YOur dog is a 3 second snack. Gives you 3 seconds to figure it all out.

youll be welcomed ;)

havnt seen any cougars, but have seen A LOT of coyotes and saw a few bears.
Thanks!

Hmmm other than bears we don't have any big predators here in Newfoundland. And bears aren't really a problem here.
however p*ssed or randy Moose can be kinda scary though!
:D

Not a chance. The average mountain lion isnt going to be that much larger than my dog. Even that oversized garfield in the photo would have its hands full for a length of time.

Like I said, there is a difference between them squaring off alone and dealing with a cat with you and your dog. Odds are the cat will go for the dog since its and animal and much smaller than you. That gives me all the time in the world to call up Mr Heckler and Mr Koch.

Even if it is 3 seconds, thats all I'll need.

In the last 7 years I have not seen a cat in the wild but I do regularly see fresh tracks.

I don't know if you'd ever get a chance to get a shot off before realizing one has you in it's jaws but it would be stupid to go into the woods without a knife, a fair size folder such as the Buck 110 at least. A revolver would be better!

The cougars are becoming more of an issue to me now more than in the past because I have two young kids that want to take them with me on future camping trips.

I don't care to hunt them but I hope they reintroduce hunting for keeping their population in check here in California.

My wife used to hike with our daughter (in a baby-backpack) in a city park that now has a sign posted warning that cougars have been seen in the park.

If they don't fear humans enough to come that close to people, my opinion is that they should be exterminated. Before anyone attacks me for saying that, consider your children playing in one of these parks. These are parks in which dog's aren't allowed off leashes for safety reasons, how do you expect to control a large predator like a cougar?
