What steel has better edge retension? 5160 vs SR101 vs VG10

No one should ever try to talk you out of a R7, for a 7 inch blade is the best bang for the buck you will find in production knives imo. I prefer SR101 over INFI and I am not the only one to feel this way. I would take the R7 over the TGLB any day of the week.

52100 (SR101) would be my guess if you are only talking about edge retention. Followed by VG10 and then by 5160. 52100 IIRC is used for truck ball bearings. It is tough as hell and holds a screaming sharp edge for a ridiculously long time. I think it's what Ed Fowler uses for his Pronghorn knives. Nothing wrong with 5160 either. It is a great carbon steel too.

The thing is, most VG10 knives will retain an edge, but they won't hold up to shock and stresses very well. For some reason it seems to be a little more brittle than carbon steels. That's why you don't see a whole lot of bigger blades made out of it. They tend to bust doing stuff like batonning. With the other 2 steels I would beat em up and not worry at all.

Ulf - I see you mentioned the A1. It is an excellent knife! A little expensive, but worth it. I had one and the S1 forest knife too. Both excellent blades. I don't think I'd be comfortable prying or doing abusive stuff with either one, but doing regular knife stuff they did fine.

I think I'm gonna have to try sr101 I've heard nothing but more than positive things about it.

The good thing is, you can get a really nice fixed blade for not a lot of money. Pick one up from the Exchange, I'd bet you score a great deal on a new or almost new knife.

Ulf, that one started as an F2 with Thermorun rubberhandle.
It's the older, discontinued version of the F2 and it was on sale with a 50% discount!
It's showed to the right in this pic.

Fällkniven wanted it to be more of a slicer and made it thinner and today it has a 2,5 mm spine.

I had a nice stag taper and some nickelsilver for the bolster, so I made a Scagel influenced handle.

Great looking knives. Forgot that Fallkniven makes a vast assortment of styles of knives. Those shrimp gotta be from home right?

To my experience VG-10 hold an edge just as well as a carbon steel also in bigger blades!

Here are pic's from an unintended contact with chalkstone/Marble.
The blade is the 8" NL2 in VG-10.

The damage was so small, that I didn't get a good pic of it and it was a quick job to fix.
The bright spot in the stone is a clean cut from the tip of the NL2.

Some FK knives benefits from a few resharpenings when new, before they start to perform.
Brittle? No!

MOST VG10 blades will retain a great edge for a long time, but most VG10 seems to be a lot less shock resistant than most carbon steels. Brittle? Ehhh, maybe I didn't use the best word there. I think "less shock resistant" works better for what I was trying to get across. That's all I meant. I think it may be a little different with Fallkniven's laminated VG10. I like Fallkniven's knives lot. You don't often see VG10 used in many knives bigger than the average folder. I think the tendency to snap instead of flex has a lot to do with it.

I like your pics a lot! I do a fair amount of fishing/hunting/camping myself. Nice looking trout man! I bet it was good.

Go for it man. You will definitely be impressed. Like RevDevil said - you should be able to get one on the exchange for a good price. Then beat the crap out of it and see how you like it!

That's a good idea. Have you caught any trophy trout using shrimp?

No, Rainbows not more than 7 pounds, but it was fun anyway!

My largest Seatrout to date is a 15.5 pounder and that one stirred some adrenalin.

But the favorite is Northern Pike.
I practise C&R on the larger ones and the 33.7 pounder below got it's freedom back.

Good info to know. I'm heard the same thing about VG-10 being a steel not being a steel that you could beat the hell out of as much as others but I'm going get a Fallkniven non the less cause don't have any heavy duty stainless knives just mora's so probably gonna go with S1 for good durability and stainless and rodent 7 for beating on more and for probably some better edge retension.

Monster Pike! :D I love Pike they're always bittening and got great tasting meat on smaller ones. Those trout you caught are nothing to sneeze at either. Great catches.

Well, there's been threads recently about VG-10 and how it really acts.
It seems most users like it in both folders and fixed blades.

To my experience with the laminated VG-10 blades, as Hattori-Hamono does them, they outperform my older stock of carbonsteel blades!
The outer layers of softer 420j2 ensures 20% more bending strenght than the FK monoblades.

However, what You prefer in a knife is very much a personal taste.
For me, finding the big NL Bowie's sold by a local brand here in my little country, is nothing short of incredible!
We certainly aren't used to find such knives availible here over the counter.

You will love the S1 and the Rodent 7. I was not very gentle using my forest knife and it never broke. I didn't try to carve up a Buick or anything, but it handled any woodcraft or camping chores I did with it with no problems at all. Now the Rodent 7 probably COULD carve up a Buick! You'll be happy with both of them. If I still had my S1, I'd send it to you for a while to see if you liked it. It's long gone tho.

Now that's a fish! I heard pike fight like a mofo before you can land em!

This one was weighty, but didn't fight as hard as 10 to 15 pounders.
They like to jump straight up in the air up to 4 feet above the water!

The S1 is a good size and works well for both batoning firewood and cleaning a fish for dinner.
For chopping it's too small, but it fits well into a 3 knife system.

They defineatly fight like a mofo.:D Muskies even more so. Do you not have any pike in texas? Probably to hot for them huh. What kinda fish you catch down in Texas?

That would be great. I asked some stores around hear if they carried them and they didn't.

I found some descent prices on both. $130 for S1 and $160 for A1 so since I got the money on me now probably gonna buy both and see which one I like better and sell the other.
