It's like you're reading my mind.

I tried SO hard not to say that! :D

I need a cap lifter on a knife like Custer needed more Indians. :thumbdn:

LOL! :D  I like cap-lifters, but just not on EVERY knife!

I agree with Jack.
I feel we got hit by the bottle opener wave, which is fine for me (considering I have a Bantam in my pocket right now :p) but it doesn't have to be ubiquitous. Also, as other pointed out, a cap lifter looks fine on certain patterns/frames, and weird or plain wrong on others (in my opinion of course).

Personally, I've found cap-lifter mania a thorough pain in the backside! :grumpy: We have lost members over it! :grumpy: Very useful tool, I use one all the time, but the obsession with ruining otherwise traditional patterns by adding one is...well you know what I think  Other fashions have come and gone here, and I look forward to the day when the cap-lifter is, once again, regarded as an interesting and useful addition to a few traditional patterns like a punch or nail-pen, and nothing more than that

The original question is very vague. Do you mean in general what do people think about a cap lifter? Victorinox makes a bazillion knives a year with cap lifters. People obviously like them. Otherwise Victorinox wouldn't make tem. By comparison, there are very few from other brands.

Are you talking specifically about knives made by GEC (the unofficial subject of this forum ;) )? All the knives ever made by GEC over the years is probably far fewer than the number of knives Victorinox makes with cap lifters each year.

Or are you speaking about the discussions for the forum knife? Preferences for the forum knife may be due to other factors such as what has been previously made for the forum knife rather than a like or dislike for caplifters.

A cap lifter is just one of many different types of tools. What about clip blades? Or sheepfoot blades? Or Wharncliffe blades? There are LOTS of knives with those blades.

What is ridiculous to some may not be to others. I think a GEC "Whaler" with a caplifter is ridiculous. But I'd also say a "Whaler" is a ridiculous pattern anyway. It's original use is obsolete. But that doesn't stop folks from enjoying them. I think if we're honest with ourselves there are a lot of ridiculous trends in knife collecting... What's with all the love for single blades? What's with the pinched bolsters? What in the world is with the cloud shields? What's with all the saber grinds recently?

In the context of this sub-forum, I've seen what appears to be very pro and very anti sentiments. I was just trying to see what everyone really thought.

Well put Jake. It all depends on the context. Does a bottle-opener go well with a pattern or is it just a trend? Some knives suit them, most don't. As Jeff says, I only really find a use for bottle openers in the home, not on the go...My Beer Scout hangs on a nail from the kitchen, it slices lemons, limes for drinks and opens beers or ciders very efficiently, but I would not carry it with me-maybe a picnic I suppose. I don't particularly like using the screwdriver head either, it could end up damaging the pivot or bolster.

The craze for bottle-openers might fly in the face of aesthetics and mechanics on many patterns, then I tire of them.

I see a nightmarish vision of an Ettrick with a bottle-opener looming out of the mists of absurdity....:eek::D:D

Geeez, that's a painfull thought Will.:D

Best regards

I can open a beer without a caplifter. To me they are often just gaudy looking, but maybe I haven't seen the right one

I can eat an apple without cutting it. Usually when I'm eating, kitchen knives and flatware are readily available. And I consider a pocket knife the wrong tool for food prep. But there are lots of folks in this forum that say they enjoy using their pocket knives for eating an apple or food prep. Opinions will vary.

I don't understand the opinion that it's "gaudy". It's a tool. It has utility. And it's a very traditional tool in pocket knives. I don't understand the "aesthetics" in pocket knife collecting. For me there is utility and tradition. Everything was worked out about 100 years ago.

Aesthetically I like caplifters/bottle openers on SAKs and scout patterns, the beer scout and radio jack. Not sure if I would like it on a classic barlow for example with a longer metal bolster. So maybe for me :).

As I said, maybe I haven't found the right one. They appear gaudy to me, not to everyone. Also, I am not a pocket knife "collector", so it isnt strictly about the looks. I use all of my knives, and since I don't use caplifters, I find them unnecessary :)

- Let me just add here, that we say 'bottle-opener' not 'cap-lifter' in Britain, and while I've always 'Americanized' my posts , or so I thought, I'm told by some of our US members, that there are parts of the US where the word 'cap-lifter' is unknown, and they say 'bottle-opener'.
I'm in the part of the U.S. where we say "bottle-opener" and drink "pop." Regardless of what we call 'em, I don't really care for 'em. It's pretty much a waste of a blade for me. I've carried a Leatherman Squirt on my keyring for years now and always have a bottle-opener and a couple of different sized screwdrivers available.

As long as they have a phone, today's youngsters don't need a wristwatch. As long as they have a Bic, they don't need a bottle opener. I need one sometimes, but I always have one on my Micra.

I hear a punch can be handy for shot-gunning Red Bull.

Good stuff Ken :)

Aesthetics of pocket-knives are important, tastes obviously vary but some patterns having openers or lifters are a basic effront.

Caplifter Congress??? Caplifter Peanut aka Kapnut..
