This thread and some of the recent posts got me thinking that pretty much everything about knives is polarizing, and surprisingly so. Just as many people seem to worship single blade knives, for their slim and light characteristics, as people who vastly prefer multi-blades or even multiple knives, putting up with the extra weight and bulk for added utility. And some people do both, loving single blades but carrying two or more of them at the same time! There is no ceiling on peoples' desires, and the variety of knives and blades are there to satisfy those varying needs (or wants). Like every other blade or tool, they have their place . . . for some. ;)

A congress with four caplifters?

You're SUCH a BAD man!!! :D

I think on one pattern a cap lifter just belongs, maybe because a scout knife was my first knife. So I've always had a fondness for them.

I haven't had a use for a bottle opener in a very long time and leatherman is better suited as a screw driver.

I have seen a number of the customized Beerlows that have been made and would like a production model. I would like to own one as it strikes me as a very useful carry blade. After that I don't need any more than that. The bottle opener is not the mark of a truly fine knife but a good multi-purpose user.

I am all for the greatest diversity of blade combinations that make sense to all different kinds of users. I won't force you to accept a bottle opener but don't get all antagonistic when I want a barlow with one. Just sayin'.

I happen to like caplifters.

For the most part, promotion seems big on this forum. Any criticism is usually poorly received. I'm surprised beating on caplifters is being so well received. Poor defenseless cap lifters. :(

I am 100% in agreement with Jack. I don't get why so many people seem to want bottle openers on every knife (aside to Jack - I'm an American and I have never heard the term "cap lifter" until seeing it on this forum - they are bottle openers).

I suppose if people want to carry a single pocket tool for all possible tasks they might encounter, and they drink a lot of bottled beverages while out and about, then it would make sense for them. Though the bottle opener is such a ubiquitous add on for every pocket tool in the world that I can't see why you would also need one on your stag or bone-handled jack knife too.

Personally, I never need a bottle opener on my person. If I am drinking a bottled beverage (beer), I am either at home, where I have a kitchen with a bottle opener or three, or at a bar or restaurant where they open the beers for you.

I love my Radio Jack, my Scout Knives, my British Army clasp knives, etc ie patterns that have traditionally had a bottle-opener - Let me just add here, that we say 'bottle-opener' not 'cap-lifter' in Britain, and while I've always 'Americanized' my posts , or so I thought, I'm told by some of our US members, that there are parts of the US where the word 'cap-lifter' is unknown, and they say 'bottle-opener'. However, I regard the constant - and it has only been constant over the past couple of years - demand to add cap-lifters to every pattern available with little short of disgust, and to be honest - hope this doesn't sound too insulting - as short-hand for STUPID :grumpy:

I live in the US, if you were having a conversation with someone and asked for a cap lifter they would have no idea what you were talking about. It seems to be US knife terminology use only... in my opinion. I'm sure someone will come along and completely disagree with me, but I grew up here and everywhere in the US I've traveled I've never heard anyone say cap lifter.

Back on topic, I voted cap lifter. I like having the ability to use it as a flat head or pry into something without concern of dulling a blade. I've learned my lesson by twisting up one torquing too hard so it's light duty use only, but nice to have as needed. Plus I like to drink beer in a bottle and it makes me look cool popping open a beer with a kick a** knife lol.

Most of the discussion is about a combination tool. It's not a cap lifter. It's a cap lifter and screwdriver.

P.S.: I intended this thread (and weighed my post) assuming we were talking about a SAK style combo tool on the 2016 BF knife. :)

Of course I don't mean any hostility. It's just my opinion, but I do respect tradition. I also respect that you like caplifters and I understand why you do. Theyre just not my ideal use of space. That's also not to say it won't change, I haven't experienced every knife and so something could come along and prove differently to me. Like I said in the other thread, I will buy a forum knife no matter what blade or tools are on it.

I think everyone "wants" a caplifter on every knife just because there have been so few produced lately. Even the beer scouts haven't been in high numbers. I bet if they were readily available, you wouldn't hear as much about it.

As far as why..... well I guess is just a little more fun to open a tasty beverage with your pocket knife than the one on the refrigerator.

Adam, My response wasn't directed at you. There's an angry mob. ;) I appreciate that everyone had differences of opinion.

I could probably come up with a list of 50...maybe 100... ridiculous trends in modern knife collecting before I'd even start thinking about the popularity of cap lifters.

There are GEC cap lifter knives selling for more than double the original retail price. As a business, GEC would be crazy not to make more. Demand is obviously far greater than supply.

Yup, I agree with you. Everybody just wants a bottle opener on a GEC. Preferably on something that doesn't say "beer" on it's shield or is 4.5" plus long.

I would love a spear/caplifter boys knife..... between that and a scout would be the only caplifters I'd want.

I was thinking of asking in The Lounge about the Cap-lifter/Bottle-opener thing!! Maybe we can start calling them bottle-openers?
