Personally, I've found cap-lifter mania a thorough pain in the backside! :grumpy: We have lost members over it! :grumpy:

That seems ill-advised.
I bet anyone who would leave in a huff over that would have quickly found something else to trigger them when they didn't get their way.

I would love a spear/caplifter boys knife..... between that and a scout would be the only caplifters I'd want.

 Both traditional designs, which traditionally have bottle-openers

Perhaps, but unless I'm mistaken, I don't think you've been here to see the intensity of discussion on this subject over numerous threads. We''ve lost long-standing members who weren't asking for anything, but simply had enough of it

I probably have called them both cap lifters and bottle openers. I'm not sure it makes much difference. It ignores the screwdriver function though. I'm not sure why the cap lifter function is emphasized so much on the forum... maybe its because drinking is more fun than chores. In the old catalogs both functions were emphasized.

"Combination Blade, with Cap Lifter... and Screw Driver"

Fine old catalogue pic!

I want one of those Corn blades on my next knife, it could actually be a useful scalpel type thing:D:thumbup:

I think your demo knife got in a fight with your scout.

Yes and it looks like it lost.

I've always called them bottle openers but I call this a Church Key. So what do I know.

Good point

Church-key it is! :)

I must say that as someone who has been correcting my useage of the word 'bottle-opener' for some years now, it is something of a revelation to find out that I needn't have bothered!

Now what about that tomato acrylic?! :D

Ok, so this thread was really about the planned forum knife? There was no mention of that in the original post.

It's an academic question for me. I carry a Vic Alox Mini Champ and Alox Cadet with me all the time, so I have two bottle openers already. Not to mention the two Leatherman tools in my work bag, and another one in my car. So I have a ton of bottle openers if I want one (which I never do). I also have real, full-sized screwdrivers with multiple bits in case I need to turn a screw.

I just don't need one on my higher-end pocket knives too.

It normally wouldn't make any difference to anyone what someone else wanted on their knives, but with the limited GEC production, it's a zero sum game. If they only do a single run of 15s each year, and this year is all bottle openers, then I have to wait a year for the next shot at what I want. And vice versa- if you are a big drinker and must use a GEC knife to open your beers, then you have to wait a year if they go with all blades this year.

It was definitely inspired by it, but not limited to it. There has been lots of discussion in more than one thread.

I carry a soda scout frequently and use the crown lifter (har har!) a lot.

However..... I think the sheepsfoot blade is not the best choice for it, because if you're not careful lifting a crown, you can squeeze the closed blade into the knife handle very easily and compress it into the spring. So to be honest, I think the crown lifter is best on opposing end patterns (in which we haven't seen many (any?) options outside of SAK)

Without a proper prior explanation, the poll is completely worthless isn't it? If we're talking about bottle-openers in general, I'm fine with them on the patterns they've traditionally been added to. If we're talking about the forum knife, my objection would be that it was done in 2011

The poll is just so people can vent about it. The discussion is what's really important.

I voted "maybe" since I don't know what knife. Scout/Camp/Utility/SAK the bottle opener is pretty much a given, as part of the screwdriver blade.
I would not want one on my canoe, stockman, or Barlow.

The 2011 Knife was something of a learning-curve for GEC with regard to bottle-openers....it doesn't work that well on this knife:o and a certain 'technique' is required to get the tops off. Fortunately, the Beer Scout does not suffer from this fault.

If this discussion is aimed mainly at the Forum Knife then I certainly say nay to another bottle-opener this year. Except maybe on that Ettrick....:D

I need a cap lifter on a knife like Custer needed more Indians. :thumbdn:

I do like a good similie.
End of the day I think screwdriver for screwing things and most screws I encounter are phillips head.I can pretty much open any capped bottle with anything so no real need for caplifter but I do like them tho not on every knife.
As for the punch we dont have one on a bf knife yet so thats a definite maybe and the winner imo.

When I look around me, I see less and less bottles and more and more cans for any liquid. Furthermore, most bottles can be opened without any opener, simply twisting the cap by hand.
When I was young, in French a canette named a 25 or 33cl bottle. Now it is a small can (containing liquid).
When I voted I decided to go neutral, in fact now less so.
The corn blade is amazing. But I would be most happy with a "simple" lambsfoot!
