What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

A Queen Mini Trapper in D2 and bird's eye maple just arrived this afternoon. My shoddy pic doesn't begin to do the covers justice... :o

Thanks Ed! It is also a special knife as it was a gift for my birthday. Last year my GF got me the ivory fruitport and this year she got me the stag :) !

Those Champlins are pretty awesome looking too!

Thanks for the comments folks. I like all of those knives a lot. The S&M came pretty dull but sharpened up nicely. The Champlins are very good out of the box. I like them better than I thought I would, but I was sure enough that I'd like them that I ordered an ivory bone TC version for EDC. I probably will carry the rosewood one very sparingly. I think I would carry the stag more, but it is so knice that I may have to just put them both away and carry the 92 TC.

I'll drop some more photos in when I get a chance to take them.

Kevin that Scagel fruitport is just really special. That knife has wonderful proportions; it just looks RIGHT.

Really good looking knife Kevin. Been looking at those for a while now, but I can't get over those engraved serial numbers. One of my pet peeves...

- Christian

Well the good news for you, Christian, is these knives are not engraved and have no blade etch. Thanks btw :)

The trusty moose, ya'll are gonna get tired of seeing this :D

NOPE!! I will not get tired of seeing that one! Post on my friend!

thank you my brother. Nice to see the Scagel back at your side :)

Yeah man, its great to have it with me. One downfall, this weekend I was with my dad and he asked for my knife. Normally I just toss him whatever I have in my pocket. I hesitated with this one, after he saw it he even asked if I wanted him to use it. It has that 'niceness' to it and the break in process is going slow. Still not letting the patina set in :)

The 76 became a knife I didn't care about much other than losing, so this new stag one is more nerving if that makes sense.

rd, that knife (backpocket?) looks great from where I sit. The bone is really a great color.

> higonokami with a rubber band to prevent opening

I think a sheath would do the trick if you intend to pocket carry a higonokami. I think of them more as a tool box knife

this carry technique requires a hole in the lever, though imo, less secure against accidental opening than a sheath

found this searching the net for "do people use a sheath for higonokami knife":

"In order to improve the grip I have bought a traditional Japanese leather sheath for my higo no kami Dai, which looks like a traditional sheath for folders but is open on the back an spots a lanyard hole. You put the higo no kami Dai in this sheath, then put a leather strap through the lanyard holes both of the sheath and the knife (thereby also securing the knife to the sheath). To open the knife, pull it up and out by the protruding tang, open it and then push it back into the leather sheath with now serves as a kind of leather scales to the handle. The grip is greatly improved by this and I am told that many Japanese carry their higo no kamis this way."

"it is really not a pocket knife at all. If you put it in your pocket, everyday jingles and movement will open the blade with disastrous results to your pocket and maybe your leg. My advice is to make or get a small leather pouch for it"

It is a single blade trapper. About 4 1/8" closed. The bone is a great color and has nice jigging, too. My only knock at this knife is that the blade is slightly off center. Doesn't bother me because it doesn't come close to rubbing the liners. Really solid lockup. It gives me great hope for the new management at Queen.

I also find the birdseye maple covers hard to photograph. They look so much better in the hand than in the photos.

Inspired by the posts above, I'm carrying my Higonokami today.

I also carry my Abram Brooksbank in a wee pocket sheath, and it's always a pleasure to carry :)
