"Buckthorn is a nastty [sic] invasive." I believe European buckthorn's (Rhamnus cathartica) invasive effects vis-a-vis native understory species include physical competition and distribution of its prolific seeds by birds. The wood has approximately the same density as hard maple. Many of the trees have a deep red, photo-reactive heartwood and an unusual visual presentation that comes from a reticulated pore distribution. Most usable sections for carving and knife handles are of limited size.
