What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

My brother bought me this at a gun and knife show. He had no idea what it was, but he had a feeling the beat up thing was worth the 25 bucks they asked for it. All in all, a pretty good gut feeling there.

We all nuts about Walnuts, Steve (and that's a cool rock under them)!:thumbsup:🤓

Gary I am always sorry to hear stories like this. I've more than one myself, and new experiences made almost weekly in our poor urban neighborhood with ineffectual animal control. Jeff is right, people that can't restrain their aggressive animals suck.
But then again, almost everybody thinks their little muffy is the sweetest... My friend was once walking in his neighborhood, and after asking the owner if it was friendly, extended a closed hand to be sniffed by a passing dog. Who promptly bit him and drew blood. He said "Hey lady, you said he was nice and he just bit me straightaway!" and she yelled back "My dog would NEVER bite anyone!" and stormed off. That's people for ya'.
After *years* of this sort of thing it's come to carrying this. I would like to show everyone my other walking buddy. Scars are from being pulled down by two large dogs some years back, they attacked a cute little Shibi Inu I was dogsitting for a friend and I waded into the fray... Almost ended up being my 3.75" Benchmade vs. two large aggressive animals, but the owner ran out and restrained them while I lay bleeding in the lawn with a knife in my hand. It was a bad situation. Stay safe out there people!

Apologize for not having time to look back more than a few pages but thanks to everyone for their pics. This combo does everything I might need today. @ephsea this Busse SK saved mine and my wife's bacon one day during a walk when attacked by a full grown male Rottweiler on the loose in a cul-de-sac close to where we live. A lady saw it occur and opened her front door for us to get inside. It had previously chased her inside while she was carrying in her groceries. She was an angel looking out for us. Wife screaming wildly, me firmly "don't run" in defensive stance in front of her with SK drawn. Big boy zooming at us from about 100 ft away, mad as hell about something, stopping about a foot from me. Honestly thought we were both going to the ground both bleeding alot. Slowly backed away and got inside our angel's house, called 911, waited for animal control to show up, lasso the mutt and issue owner a citation. Owner was PO'd yelling at me. Told him he was lucky I didn't have my 9mm on me. For the record I love dogs, but there is no place for big aggressive dogs on the loose.

Those are some scary dog attack stories, FC & Chief!:thumbsdown: I guess I should be grateful that neither I nor my little dog has gotten hurt in our unfriendly encounters with other dogs, and the only times I've been bitten is a couple of times while walking during the winter when dogs grabbed my hand, but I was wearing heavy cowhide mittens that their teeth didn't get through.
FC, those are a couple of nice pairs of knives you posted!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I really like your South African toothpick with its intriguing handle material!:cool::thumbsup:

Couple of splendid knives in your new/old pairing!:cool::thumbsup:

Been fiddling with these Rough Riders on Thrifty Thursday. The red one is a splitback. The green has a lockback main blade.

That's exactly the kind of "volunteer" onions that we've had in the back yard every spring for the 38 years we've been in our house!:thumbsup::cool: The ones we haven't used yet have those little "bulb clusters" on top right now.

Nice set-up, Vince, and cool gift from ED!:thumbsup::cool:
Will your Case amber trapper fit in that sheath?

I always admire your handsome 72 Gary, and that Otter is pretty cool too :)
Thanks for the kind words, as always, Jack. :)

Notable pair, Jon; I'm especially enamored with that Winchester stockman!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Eureka Jack joining my already scheduled Tribal Lock for today, will be swapping back and forth as the day goes on.

Congrats on the new Eureka Jack! Outstanding photo, too; the shield on your Tribal Lock and the jigging on your Eureka both look sensational.:cool::thumbsup:

Thanks Gary, but cannot take credit for handle.
Don't be shy, Bob. 😁 Often when traveling with my wife, she'll say something like, "Look at that beautiful landscaping!" at a property we pass, and I'll say, "Thanks!" I'm willing to take credit where credit isn't due.

It's a rotten thing to have to deal with Gary. I used to carry the shaft of an old fishing rod rest, which my industrious grandfather had made. It was 3ft or so in length, made from thick, substantial cane, and with a brass ferrule at either end. Have you thought about a sjambok?

That was half the problem with that dog too, it had a lot to say, but was as soft as anything. It belonged to an ex, and while a nice dog, had never had any training

Thanks buddy :)
Jack, I've thought of many random things on my walks around town, but I've never thought about a sjambok, since I'd never heard of it until you mentioned it! o_O🤓 I looked it up, and it seems to be rather like a riding crop on steroids! I also learned (via Wikipedia - consider the source) that the police in Sheffield were once investigated for purportedly using them on "detainees". The device seems to have Dutch origins (via South Africa), as do I (not via South Africa).

I hand picked this Sodbuster at the Case factory store last week in Bradford, PA. The best Case knives are excellent, although you might have to go through a few to find the right ones! It is worth the effort. Go to your local dealer and enjoy coon fingering and chicken eyeing a few until the best ones pop to the surface. It’s a great way to spend one of these sweltering afternoons.

Case still owns the title for best jigging. I believe the same jigging set up has been in use for decades.
Superb SBJr, LT; I'm glad you enjoyed your trip!:cool::thumbsup:

Congrats on the new Mercator (and the Otter sodbuster I saw in some other thread)!:cool::cool:
Is the Mercator the large lockback model, or the smaller slipjoint?

I was spreading mulch with this in my pocket until I got chased inside to avoid the storm. Calling it quits for the day.View attachment 2258644

Today was my daughter Eleanor’s 7th birthday, so I had the Nifebrite #71 Bull Nose that I was carrying the day she was born with me again.

Eleanor has been asking to do these climbing walls at the Mall of America for a while, so she decided to do that for her birthday with one of her friends.

After the girls had worn themselves out climbing, we grabbed lunch, walked around and mall a bit, and went to a local toy store we like (not at the Mall of America) so the kids could each get something small. Eleanor’s friend is staying the night, so we’ve just been hanging out at the house letting them play. We had breakfast for dinner and lemon cake for dessert (both Eleanor’s request).

As always, I’ll repost her yearly birthday knife photos, starting with the first one.

Happy belated birthday to Eleanor! Looks like an awesome time, great memories to cherish. Very interesting, unique, and fun climbing walls. They sure grow up fast. Thanks for sharing!

Gonna be another scorcher. We only hit 97º yesterday but think it will hit the 100º mark this afternoon. We may venture into town but that's a big maybe. Almost too hot to eat breakfast ????????? A simple Sod Buster Jr. should do all I need today.

Case knives inducted the greatest knife maker of them all, Tony Bose, into their Hall of Fame. Reese accepted the honor on behalf of his family. I was very proud of Case. They honored Tony well. Only about a dozen people have been so honored since Case began operating in the late 1800’s. Tony was the first one in over 20 years. I managed to buy the Stag Western Trapper from Reese and will be totin’ it for a while. I find Reese’s knives to be indistinguishable from Tony’s except for “R” on the tang stamp!

I'm a big fan of Case's Amber Jigged Bone (this is the fourth knife I have in that, which is as close as I've ever gotten to some kind of structured collection). I think the handles on this one are excellent examples of what I love about it.

Unfortunately, the centering is off enough that there's a tiny bit of blade rub, the tip doesn't quite close into the blade well, and the backspring has some gaps.

It seems to be pretty filthy around the pivot. There are large chunks of black gunk in there - it looks almost as bad as my GEC 97 did when it arrived, but this Sodbuster Jr. has really good snap, so it can't be as bad as the 97 was. That GEC felt like a friction folder until I thoroughly cleaned it; now it has a fine action. I'm hoping that a good cleaning of this Case will correct at least the gaps in the backspring (I can see some gunk piled up in there) and maybe the tip being proud.

Finally, the blade has a little corrosion on it already - and the box has a sticker that proudly proclaims "DISPLAY". I will chop up a bunch of meat and veggies and fruit with this over the next few days, so I don't mind the spotting - it will be buried under an avalanche of patina. But it really irritates me to pay full price on something and have the retailer send me a display model. Bad form.

So Tyson, Tyson A Wright Tyson A Wright - how's it coming with that Amber Jigged Bone Sod Buster Jr.? and where the heck have you been? Inquiring minds want to know. Hope you've got the knife sorted to your liking.

Thank you. Lock back. Fit and finish on both is excellent.

Two (2) blades to start my Sunday off. Haven't carried the Camillus jigged bone jack in awhile, blade pull and snap are right where they suit me. Thin grinds, sharp edge and very close to if not full blades which can be somewhat rare on a knife of its age that has seen a bit of use.
The small Schatt & Morgan jigged bone sleeveboard has all the qualities mentioned about the Camillus above and makes a fine watch pocket carry. Have an enjoyable Sunday folks.
