What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

July 25
Feeling kind of close to my wife Vik today, because she’s a good one to have alongside when you have to face up to hard things.
So I’m going to start using the Vik Fisherman that she gave me for Christmas 40 odd years ago. It’s not worn out, I’ve always tried to take care of it, but I carried this one everyday alongside my Schrade 293Y Trapper. 85EB7D98-89A5-4B21-9776-47D6528376BE.jpegF7619DD7-E20E-47F1-967A-467F0638CE1C.jpeg
It’s been six years today since our elder son passed from his injuries, so what better day to use two knives given by fellow Blade Forum folks in his honor ~ a “Better Than I Deserve” GEC Oregon Trapper, and a thoroughly perfect in every way Schrade 881Y. Deep thanks as always, John, Chief Chief and Rachel, r8shell r8shell .

Headed out to town soon to pick up prescriptions and tooth paste at Rite Aid. My mouth is giving me fits this morning so no breakfast and only soup if we go to the Wagon Wheel Cafe. Might just come home for tomato soup and buttered bread. My swallow is great - just not cheeks and gums. Anyway, I'll be totin Bunny #525 and another yet undecided knife.

A little behind on my photos...
You made up for it with that heron shot. Good job getting close enough to photograph one, even with my zoom at 5x I can never catch them on the camera phone.
canning beets and turnip greens
People can greens? What do they taste like and how do you eat them?
Thanks for sharing memories of your son Jeff. He looks like a fine fellow, I'd say you did a great job. My condolences on the greatest of all losses. Grief is the price we pay for a life full of love, neh? 😥
Likely more than a century separates these fine knives. Though it be at least 100 years old that old Challenge still walks smooth and talks with authority!
That is one credible old HJ there David. Nice that it's still getting out in it's old age.

Dont click sad its my English sense of humour 😁

I couldn't find the "show us your knife and ice-cream thread" nor the "show us you knife and Kiwi fruit (from Chili) thread" so heres mine. 😁

Then I went back out to do some yard work, sometimes you just have to do something manual.

I got two big hunks of tree trunk last year when they cut some trees down,I could hardly lift them in my car and made a right mess.

My mistake was they had cut them down because they where rotten and they went more rotten and attracted bugs.

I had to cut them up to fit in my wheelie bin then hide rubbish on top.

It had to be done without making my hand injury worse so I tried a selection of tools. 🤭

Previously when it was sunny I had tried setting fire to them to no avail, probably a good job as they where near my rear door.

I also managed to freeze one of my wrist supports while trying to cool it down and then found my bottle of Baileys had also frozen.

Always good to see that beauty Mr P :)
Fine pair of Serpentine Jacks Jer :)
How old is this knife? Looks well used or was it made with the narrow blades?
Hard to say, precisely, without a tang stamp, but my guess would be early 20th century. That's all wear, the owner kept a good sharp knife

I've got a couple of old Challenge Cut Co. knives, the fit-finish, action, quality is unrivaled by any maker. Very impressive knives that were made to last a lifetime.

My condolences as always Jeff. This will be a good day to keep Manny near by.
And as always, that’s much appreciated, Ed.
I have only seen Manny in mourning twice. First, because he was shut up in Jason’s room with him for hours before I busted in the lock and found him, for weeks he just went and laid on his bed, or curled up on a pile of his clothes. The second time was when our other dog died of congestive heart failure. Manny and I sat with him on the kitchen floor all day on his last day, and Manny really moped around for a long time missing his buddy.
Niw, he sticks to my side like glue.

The only other time he just laid around for days on end was after he caught covid from me.

I hope your swallow keeps improving!
My thoughts go out to you and your family Jeff. May good memories surround you today.

Thank you very much, Bob.

Greens aren’t for everybody… My wife did not care for them at first, but she’s coming along.
I just cook them in chicken broth, then pack them in quart mason jars, and process in the pressure cooker, following the guidlines in the Ball Canning Guide.
They taste the same as always.

Thank you for the nice comment, and that is possibly the most insightful statement on grief I’ve ever heard.

Grief fades, replaced by all the good memories. It’s just days like this I feel the stab. And I appreciate this here Porch where I can let it out a little.

Thanks, my friend. It’s a part of life that everyone here has to face.
