What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

Iris seems just as upset as me that this hurricane claimed our 30+ year old pomegranate tree. The fruit was close to being ripe too. Hoping there’s some way to salvage it 😔

Sorry about the pom tree, but maybe if you prune it hard, it will re-sprout. Or maybe you can root some cuttings?

Iris reminds me of my campaign to get Manny to eat vegetables. Besides your shots of Iris eating apples, my vet sort of insisted on it. So now, I cook some vegatables with a little meat or fat, and mix it in with his very expensive dog food. It’s working ~ he’s been eating green beans, peas, cauliflower, and various greens like soinach, and beet and turnip tops. 🤙
Look how the brickwork inside the church
The people over there were nice, but my favorite part of Scotland was the beautiful stonework. It’s everywhere.

These Imperials today I’ve been feeling sort of nostalgic about the 70s the last few days.🤔

The ‘70s were good to me. Came in at 14, came of age, graduated University of Illinois, and fell in love with the girl who became my wife.

Man. That’s nice. 👌
I carry that knife everyday. So good.
Are you and I the only porchsters using the Harvester?
Glad you kept the Case Bose Teardrop high and dry.
I have it’s twin. Had a gift card for Bass Pro Shop, and picked it out from their meager Case display. I saw better Case selections in country backroads Kentucky gas stations.
I had to have the clerk keep pulling them out until I found the best one.
Just given this half a dozen licks on the India fine to get it ready for today.View attachment 2295224
That’s a Shrade I would use a lot. Ideal blade selection, and bigger frame than my 233 and 33s.
Oilstones? 🤙
86 paired with 38 today :)

Got the back of the Crosstrek full of produce to take down to Mom and Dad’s

I took my six foot rule out there, and measured this sunflower which I planted at the ends of the beans. It’s 11 1/2 feet tall, and still growing, and the beans are climbing it and still reaching
Our Sunflowers are about there in height, though not many blooms on account of, ironically, too much Sun. Do they do well as beanpoles? How will you harvest beans 10ft up?
I wonder who first had the idea to use micarta for knife covers?

More busy days here, heat forced me inside long enough to catch up on a few pages and make a post. Heat ruined our plans this weekend too. We were gonna take the train to Sedalia for the Missouri State Fair, I wanted to take the boy to the demo derby and wife wanted to see the pig race. Hope everyone is staying as cool as possible on the Porch!

Stockman of the Week is a carbon steel Rough Rider sowbelly, one of my favorite stockman knives:

Stag/Horn Knife of the Week is a Rough Rider stag medium trapper (same size as a Case mini trapper - so confusing!):

Work Knife of the Week is a Chinese Imperial small sodbuster:

I’ve heard of using sunflowers a a companion plant, yes. And among those who’ve been growing these beans for centuries, one of the names used is Cornfield Beans, since that was a common way to grow them ~ planting with the corn gives them something to climb.
I’ve heard of people using a stepladder to pick those high beans, but I always leave a lot on the vines to dry. When they’re dry, I pull the entire vines, and sit under the maple tree and shuck them. Save some for next year’s planting, and the rest go into mason jars for cooking as dry beans ~ soup, refied beans, etc.

I’m always learning. This year, I drove 7.5’ tee posts down the rows, ran a wire across the top, and used a couple of miles of baling twine for the beans to climb. Worked fine at first, but the vines just kept growing longer and heavier, and eventually the posts were leaning, the wire was sagging, and I had a jungle. They even bridged the rows climbing each other.
Next year, I’m going back to tall tripods. I’ve already started cutting 12-15 foot poles.

This weekend is supposed to be somewhat cooler and less humid. Might still work for you. I wouldn't want to do anything outside today 🥵

Nick Knacks 😁

Modified my RR pic and made a pocket friendly one from a Iphone case popper.

With practice and flushing my HJ its now easier to open the punch

Blade out first makes it very easy to get purchase..

Would it be easier if the nick was further along the punch?

I say it again this HJ is one Dreadnought anchor of a tough, beautiful knife,I am so glad its not all fancy, its looks comes from its construction.

It deserves to be used and fulfil its roll as intended 😍

I carried other stuff through the day at the Docs etc.

Could be Jeff, the farmer seems popular.
But the harvester with hawkbill & saw😎😎. I don't carry mine every day but if I am gardening it's a go to.
Here's some of what I've been up to.
