What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

Thank you Jon, I hope I can cover A to Z.

I enjoy the dignity of use you extend to all of your knives Jon.👌
Thank you good sir. I just demand that everyone lets me peel all the apples in the house 😂. I do enjoy the look of carbon patina.

Thank you! It's one of my favorite Vipers, and also my favorite pocket slip since I made it . I never thought about myself getting a patina, but it makes sense as having two kids is putting grey hairs on my head.
Good work on that slip 👊🏼. And yes…the kids will go to work on the hair. Mine isn’t grey…it’s gone!

Charlie lamb and new to me 74.

Thanks, Jon. Crazy to think back 3 years ago from where I started and all the insanely nice knives that I have the pleasure of owning or that have passed through my hands.

This one is brand new to me, and I’ve been admiring it since getting home from work today. Love the tiny little tip bolsters. Makes the knife feel just a bit classy.

IMG-3756.jpg

Very fine construction all around and an excellently executed splitback (just look at how nicely that wedge tapers).

IMG-3757.jpg

I must admit though, I don’t know much about Keen Kutter. I just had to have it when I saw it and have not done much research into it. I’m not really finding much about the maker and I’m a bit stumped as to the age and origin of this one.

REQUESTING ANY HELP IN DATING THIS ONE

I know this may not be the right place but I appreciate any help here or someone pointing me in the right direction.

Here’s the tang stamp on the main blade. Notice the “horns” at the top of the wedge. The stamp reads “E.C. SIMMONS / KEEN / KUTTER” and I’m not able to see if there is anything lower on the stamp as it’s covered by the body of the knife in all positions. I can’t really place this specific stamp.

IMG-3754.jpg

And both smaller blades have a scaled down version of the same stamp on them. Again, note the very small “horns” at the top of the wedge.

IMG-3755.jpg

Super appreciative of any information anyone may have. My best guess based on the look and construction of the knife is early 1900s, but I’d like to try to get a date range or even narrow it down further?

Editing to add: the back of the main blade has the number 3681T stamped on it.

Rob, with that pair of large beauties, you must feel like the legendary John Henry, a steel-drivin' man!:thumbsup: 🤓

WWII Camillus pair today. Cool, and light rain. In other words, April. Perfect for germination.
Couple of perfectly matched classics, Jeff!:cool::thumbsup:

These two today.

Superb pair of knives, Tom!:cool::thumbsup:
(If we're voting, I'd go with that stag sowbelly stockman.)

Lastly is my newest finished knife. The capered crusader...I am still working on a name for it. It is a little caper knife blank I finished off with some antler my wife got from the pet store a few years ago, most likely whitetail would be my guess. I definitely learned some things with this one. It is quickly starting to become a favorite just for the looks. Now I just need to make a sheath for it.
Congrats on that fixed blade you made!:cool::cool:

(Is the pocket slip from Rough Ryder, restitched by you?)

THAT'S my idea of a Böker Barlow!:thumbsup::cool:

Somber day today... Just laid my paternal grandmother to rest. She passed exactly a month to the day from my maternal grandmother. Thirteen has been our family number over the years, not unlucky just always shows up. My maternal grandma was married on the 13th, my grandfathers race car from his younger days was #13, my paternal grandmother was born on the 13th & then both of my grandmother's passed away on the 13th... Anyway, sorry to ramble...

Ebony & Pearls seem appropriate.

"Heavens going to need a bigger boat"

I hope y'all are doing well wherever y'all are 🌹
My sympathies to you and yours for your recent losses.
Like you, I was blessed to know my grandmas, and I'm sad that my daughter never got to know my Mom. :(

Grandpa's Case Stockman. Have a great weekend everyone.

Outstanding family heirloom, Tim, and what a looker!:thumbsup::thumbsup:

Shall we gather at the river ... that flows by the throne of God?:cool::thumbsup:

Hoyt hasn't been out for air in some time so thought I'd tote it today. Going to town soon for clam chowder at the Wagon Wheel Cafe.

Clam chowder, or corn chowder, both sound great, ED!:cool::thumbsup:
I haven't had either in years.

When you post more than 2 knives at a time, I get "sensory overload"! 😲
You sure have a bunch of good ones!:thumbsup::cool:
(The shield on your Hen and Rooster is one of my favorites.)

I got out my Gator to touch up the edges in preparation for work tomorrow. Of course, Big Red goes along, too.

That Gator looks like a great knife, Jeff, and I'll bet I could carry that green/red pair until Christmas!:thumbsup:;)

Probably both, maybe with a yellow carbon copperhead and a modern.

That's my Boker Great American Story Westward Ho Bicentennial knife.
I like the looks of that BGASWHBK, even though it's name is quite a mouthful! 🤓:thumbsup:

World-class chestnut bone on your Sodbuster Jr, Chris!:cool::thumbsup:

Switched out the new old bear for the opinel just to compare/contrast for a day.

I also left my sowbelly on the dresser today, and it was hard to do... But took this awesome stockman instead that recently came from the case pass around.

The 6347 is a really great pattern and this one is dressed up very nicely!

Did that Case stockman come from Tractor Supply? 6347 is probably my favorite Case stockman model (except for sowbelly).:cool::thumbsup:
Nice handle on the Opinel; is that the standard beechwood, or something like oak?

My first knife came home !

Well ..... to say I'm pleased is an under statement ...... I'm back to long britches since it turned cold today ............... so in my watch pocket it went. I hope you like it too. 😊

Congrats on finding a knife to "match" your very first, Rob; you must be thrilled to have it!:thumbsup::cool:

Pretty much out of commission for the weekend. Suffered a fall in the bathroom last night getting ready for bed. Turned for a washcloth, hooked my toe on the clothes hamper, fell into the partition wall between the toilet and shower stall, and down I went smacking my head on the toilet bowl on the way down. This Buck 055 is all I'll need for the duration. Skipping breakfast for a ham sandwich at lunch time.

Your coasters made me think you had quite a rodeo going on in your bathroom, ED!
I hope you recover fast and fully.:thumbsup::cool:

I think I'll mosey down to Tennesse for a bit, tomorrow or Monday.
Carried the FrankenScientist the last couple of days.
Everything "come out OK" with your colonoscopy, Mike? ;)
My wife had one a month ago. I was trying to be her coach/cheerleader in drinking the gallon of "prep stuff" she was supposed to drink the night before. I even set up a schedule to help her pace herself (8 oz. every 15 minutes, or whatever it was). But she soon fell behind schedule, I eventually went to bed, and she never came close to finishing her jug. To my surprise, they admitted her to the hospital for the procedure anyway to see if they could do it; they were able to complete it, so she's off the hook for another 5 years.

Thanks Gary, but luckily I have them all (Pioneer and Pioneer X) from 2015 to 2024.;)👍
Congrats, José; that's impressive! :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

I have a RR silver sparkled octors' knife!
I'll probably get a stockman, rather than doctor's knife. (But having neither a doctor's pattern nor a sparkly knife, I could kill 2 birds with one stone if I followed your example.)

Thanks Gary. I will try to take up the challenge and entertain when I return regulary.😎

I'm looking forward to what you come up with, Bob!:cool::thumbsup:
I considered trying to participate in the journey with you, but I was left behind at the starting gate, since the only As I could come up with were AG Russell and A Wright & Son, which are lame examples right off the bat!

5K Qs 5K Qs thanks for the comment on my red farmer GT, your buck canoe is a beauty!

These two to start the week.

A very nice find ! 😍

The earlier tang stamps had St. Louis stamped below Keen Kutter. Being an E.C. Simmons dates it to pre 1940. The hammered pins likely dates it to pre early 1930's. There use to be a member here that had some old Keen Kutter catalogs ........... I can't dig it up in my head as to who it was. I doubt that you will be able to date it much narrower. Most of those old knife companies didn't change the tang stamp all that often, so you need to just be satisfied with a general range. ;)😊 W.R. Case and son is an exception that.
