very nice IXL stephen, is that jigged bone? how old is that one, do you have more pictures of it?

Thank you. I can't take much credit for it, aside from having generous friends with great taste in old knives as the IXL was a recent acquisition in trade with Primble. I believe the scales are stag, but I wouldn't venture a guess on age. Maybe someone more expert in old Sheffield knives can help us out with that question. As for additional photos, I can supply those, but again with credit going to Primble for those too.

This just came tonight, so I am borrowing a pic from 300Bucks.

A Buck 301 with ivory Micarta covers and BG-42 blade steel. The Buck Custom shop made 100 of these for the Buck Collectors Club. The Club has extras and sold one to me, a non-member.

This has the fit and finish I have come to expect from the Buck Custom shop. (flawless) The BG-42 blade steel (think stainless D2) was heat treated by Paul Bos. I think I'll not be carrying any other knives for a spell. A very long spell.

Perhaps Jack will give an opinion on the era of this old knife when he gets moving around in the morning. ;):)

The old guy that sold me the knife said this was the original sheath and he stated stag on the handle material, as well. ;)

My personal opinion was also stag, although I suppose it is possible that it is pressed bone. :)

I am not expert on Sheffield either, but, if you look at the overall condition of the knife and sheath, it is clear a good bit of time has passed since it's birth.

It is a really neat knife.

Very nice custom shop Buck - I like the look of that Frank - nice find !!!:)

Frank - Wow! That's about as good as it gets in my opinion.

Primble - Thanks for chiming in, and glad you agree with my assumption that the scales are stag. Hopefully, Jack didn't have any more weird IPA last night and will be in shape to offer up an informed opinion on the age. ;) Thanks again - for everything! :)

Love the Buck... Would want to find out how to get my hands on one. Never seen this knife. I love this community, seeing things I have never seen before. Is that a Sheep Foot blade in that Buck as well... 2 blades or 3? Thanks for sharing.

Lovely knife Primble, and wonderfully photographed as always. I think I might slip my single blade in my pocket today in homage ;)

Such a beautiful knife Stephen

He might be alright in the morning, if he wakes up.:eek::D

I'm fine thanks my friends! :D

As others more knowledgeable than myself have said, there are particular difficulties in determining the age of Sheffield knives, the same tang stamps were used for decades, and even if you can find a particular pattern in a dated catologue, the identical pattern may have still been in production 30 years later. It's an old pattern and clearly a very well made knife. Is that stag, the old cutlers often referred to jigged bone as stag (as opposed to 'genuine stag'), stag bone, or bone stag? I have a very similar slip sheath for a Rodgers knife, which is pre-WW2, which I'd say this IXL certainly is. If it's the original sheath the popper design/construction material may help with ageing the knife. Again, the knife/blades could be older than the sheath, even if the sheath came with the knife. Going out on a limb, I'd say 1930's, maybe 1920's, possibly a little earlier. For all the reasons I've given, that somewhat broad period is still a guess. Maybe Smiling-Knife or Wellington have a more knowledgeable opinion

That's a good looking knife Frank, you have inspired me to give my 303 a second chance and carry it today.

I went through such a job to get hold of one, then when it arrived I carried it for a day and was so disgusted with it that I threw it in a drawer and hadn't looked at it until now. (It is cheaper for me to buy a GEC and import it from a US vendor than to buy a buck 303) I'll try again, and if my wrath isn't placated I think I'll send it away to body shop to get resprayed and have a valeting.

Goodmorning to the gents awake on this page---Jack, Sam and Paul:thumbup:

I've been carrying the EZ Open Scout for sometime as of late for two reasons---she's a beauty and is truly easy to open:D but mainly due to my crushed thumbnail from many months back is FINALLY back to being functional to opening knife blades that normally require a FULL nail:D

So finally my FAVORITE knife of knives is back in pocket:thumbup:

I've carried some regular nail nick knives throughout the healing process (wishful thinking or just habit) but the EZ Open Scout was a blessing to use.

Have a great day and weekend everyone:thumbup:

That 301 is a beauty but they have a few in the triple digit range on that auction site and it's out of my price range.
