Quick question for the folks who "force" a patina - do you do the backsprings too? Or just the blade?

I overheard a guy trying to sell a knife to a store owner when I heard the store owner say no, he wasn't interested as it was too rough. I looked at the knife and started with an offer of five bucks, which he quickly took. I could barely see the inscription that said "Schrade U.S.A. 194OT.
I then wiped as much of the crud on it as I could, and with a short few minutes invested in wiping it down with oil, and applying some to the joint. I then put an edge on it.
For some unknown reason it found it's way into my pocket, and has been there for the last couple days. :)

Only the blades, in my endeavors.

I think is is very risky to get vinegar or other solutions on the backspring(s) and bone, etc.

I have heard of snapped springs after submerging a knife in boiling vinegar, so I don't go there. ;):)

There might be some or plenty that got away with doing it, however, the gain is not worth the risk on a good knife.

I like to do the springs too, for the slight rust-preventive effect of patina. Consider how delicate your handle material might be though.
