There may be something to that. It probably needs a professional cleaning and oiling, but that would cost many times more than I paid for the thing.

I've heard the same. My Granddad's Smith's of London gold pocket watch sometimes hasn't been wound for years, and will probably outlast both of us. My Cartier has stopped twice, and has been sat in the drawer for a couple of years, since it's the price of a half-decent watch to get it cleaned by Cartier, and I never used to wear it anyway

It came to me as a user, and that’s exactly what it’ll remain as. I’m loving it so far, but next time it needs sharpened I think I’ll thin down the tip. I’m a sucker for needle point wharncliffes.
