What "Traditional Knife" are ya totin' today?

Picked up this Boker single blade stockman in plumwood. Really liking it. Congratulations to Chief fans, see you in Tampa!

Man, those two Bokers as well as the Barlows sure look good. I don't have the bandwidth to collect GECs, Albers, and also Bokers but if I keep whiffing on GEC drops maybe I'll try out a Solingen made knife or two. The stockman reminds me a bit of the Buck 302 that I have but with a nicer suit of clothes and I have found that to be a pretty handy knife to carry.

Many thanks JJ, the Primble was a kind gift from Stuart @Duckdog :) I love the emerald green covers on your Farmer, and it's superbly combined there :cool: :) :thumbsup:
Thanks you kindly, Jack!!! I always love seeing Stuart's amazing collection; a great guy!:thumbsup::thumbsup:
Fantastic picture! The tones, colors and knives.. everything! :)
Have a good week folks :) I'm starting mine with a Hartshead Barlow, and an unusual Metal Monday knife by Needham Brothers :) :thumbsup:

Your Needham Bros. makes a very cool partner to your HHB; they were certainly ahead of their time with the "key hider" feature!:cool::cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Thank you very much @A.L.!!!

I agree - I really like this one.

As for the feel and performance of the one I have - the micarta isn't smooth, nor is it a really rough finish. Just rough enough to be nice and grippy. The matte-finished brass is the same, not smooth not too rough, feels nice in my hand and adds a bit more heft to the knife than most Barlows I've handled so far. Love the brass patina. Balance point when closed is right at the pin closest to the bolsters, when open it's right where the bolsters meet the micarta. The blade was sharp with no burrs and has been nice and slicey and stabby so far. Haven't found a need to touch up the edge, yet. It's 440c, so no modern supersteel. The matte finish is nice IMHO but with use it will scratch and self-polish. I don't use knives as heavily as I did in the past, mostly cutting fruit and opening things, so like all my knives it will take time to develop the use wear.

Fit and finish are really good on mine. No light between spring and liners, nothing proud or sunken, all edges line up and are smooth, pins and shield are flush, no blade play, smooth action and nicely snappy but not a gator snap. Being picky, the blade is slightly off-center when closed and the spring is tight enough it can break/ chip/ split my thumbnail if I'm not careful opening it (which should get a bit better over time with use). Also being picky, when mine arrived the snap into the open position was almost non-existent. Did a quick cleaning, oiled, and did a couple dozen open/ close cycles and the open snap popped into being.

Thank you for the thorough review of your Expedition Barlow. Overall, it sounds like a great one.

Thanks! The club knife has been in my pocket ever since I got it, and the stockman just arrived a few days ago. It is a sizable knife, 4” handle, almost 3” blade, but it feels delicate in the hand.

Thank you, Jack. :)

That's very cool. :cool::thumbsup:
Some day keys will be as "old school" as pocket knives.

My Father-in-law used to tell his daughters that his appendix scar was a bayonet wound from Vietnam. :D

Thanks John, probably not far off my friend :rolleyes:

LOL! :D :thumbsup:

Starting the week off with my usual Lamb and a Medium Jack.

Nicely paired John :) :thumbsup:

Nice write-up, Jack! Naturally, Vic did not credit you with the rescue knife idea. Paying royalties hurts the bottom line.

I once commented that an identical gutting blade, albeit non-serrated, would make a good draw knife for woodworking in tight quarters. I was specifically thinking about a luthier shaping a guitar neck.
I like your comment on the saw. This one is just big enough to actually use in real life. Just two days ago, I had to repair a short section of fence, which included getting some 1/2” to 1 1/2” branches out of the way, and the Wenger on my belt worked very well.
Cheers!View attachment 1497432

Thank you very much Jeff :) I never felt that Victorinox owed me anything, but an acknowledgement, beyond the UK distributor thanking me for the article, would have been nice. About a year before, I wrote a piece on the Victorinox Golfer, and commented that the name seemed to have been ascribed pretty much randomly. I suggested that they change the name to something which reflected its compact design. The word 'compact' was used several times in the piece, and highlighted in the sub-heading. I was astonished when, not long after, they changed the name of the 'Golfer' to the 'Compact'. It might just have been a coincidence of course :rolleyes: :D ;) :thumbsup:

I can see that about the draw knife Jeff, great idea :) I carried the big Vic a lot, particularly when travelling, and found the saw very useful. The knife was stolen from my bag unfortunately, and they don't make it anymore (I think there were only 3 knives of its type in the range when I got it), but I should get round to replacing it, in some form, some time. I like the look of your big Wenger, that's a useful-looking main blade :cool: :) :thumbsup:

Thank you very much @A.L.!!!

Yes indeed, I hope we'll see him back here soon JJ :) Thank you, the Needham is the only one of its kind I've come across, but I thought it was a great idea :) :thumbsup:

I've made it a Schatt & Morgan Monday with these two robust slicers in my pocket. :)

'Schatt & Morgan Monday'! Love it JJ! :cool: Such beautiful knives :) :thumbsup:

Carrying my Charlie Lamb today ;) Along with a Random Tuesday Buck 301 i was gifted by @r8shell :) :thumbsup:

Couple of colorful classics, Dean! :thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:

I got my cigar box all tuned up and ready for some slidin'. Carrying my electrician today.

Electrifying!! :thumbsup::thumbsup:;)
I know nothing about cigar box guitars. Is that toggle switch on the lower left functional as well as decorative?

...
Fab four you have today, from the humorous to the sublime; I've got a real soft spot for the old Imperials, too!:rolleyes::cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:
Thanks for your comments, JJ. :)

Ours is not to reason why... ;)

That's really funny... :D:thumbsup:

Beautiful pair of knives. :cool::thumbsup:
I always enjoy your remarks, John. :)

Boffo Black Friday threesome! :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Old users.
I am getting lazy, or maybe just wising up, but it’s becoming fun to stick with the same pocket knife(knives) for several days.

enjoy your day please.
As Dad used to say, “cheer up! Things could be worse. So, he cheered up, and sure enough. Things got worse.”
I'd call it wising up, Jeff. :thumbsup:;):thumbsup: I've decided I enjoy my knives more when I carry them for a week at a time instead of a day at a time.
Couple of black beauties! :cool::cool::thumbsup:
Dads say the darnedest things! :D

Carrying one of, if not my absolute, favorites while wfh. My home office desk has become as disorganized as my office desk.....

Cherish that stag Churchill! :thumbsup::cool::cool:
I've never owned an HP calculator, but over 40 years ago, a buddy who ran a grain elevator in a small town bought one (along with a thermal paper tape printer) and asked me to write a program he could use to input weight and moisture content of loads of corn farmers brought in and print out what he'd pay them for it. So I had to learn how to program it, and played a lot of "Lunar Lander", a program that came in the manual, to figure it out. :)

...
Thanks for the kind words buddy, great to see more of your carries this week :) :thumbsup:
...
Late posting today, as I managed to scald the back of my hand making morning coffee o_O I'm glad I keep a decent first-aid kit :thumbsup: What a week o_O Hope everyone has made it through unscathed, and that you have a good weekend :) Pairing my Hartshead Barlow with a Jose Antonio Herreros Vendetta :thumbsup:
...
Thanks, Jack. :)
That's a cool stag/horn combo! :cool::thumbsup::cool:
One of my grandfathers used to always say, "Yah, you gotta be more careful!" in response to mishaps my dad and my brothers and I would have; used to drive my dad nuts! :rolleyes: I hope you hand heals up OK. As I get older, I think I need to start wearing, on a regular basis, more safety equipment (welding gloves, goggles, wrist guards, knee and ankle braces, leather/vinyl apron, helmet, etc.). :eek:

Thank you for your comments, Gary. I think you should try the Case Texas Jack; I'm not a fan of square bolsters either, but the ones on the TJ don't seem to be sharp cornered.

I really like the bone on your RR copper pen knife. :thumbsup:
...
Thanks for the recommendation, Dean; I think I'll at least add a Texas Jack to my wish list at some dealers. ;)
Thanks for the pen knife comment; the covers are allegedly "grooved buffalo horn".

I'm carrying my I*XL Barlow for Old Friends Friday and my African Blackwood Forum knife for Black Friday.

Rumor has it that Case will soon be releasing the Copperhead from their “vault!” It is one of their greatest patterns, and I love to tote this old one.
...
That's a stunning copperhead, LT!! :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:
(With my affection for canoes, I sometimes refer to a copperhead knife as a "half canoe". :rolleyes:)

Carrying my dynamic duo today :)

Dynamic & definitely desirable, Dan! :thumbsup::cool::thumbsup:

...
That's not a bad idea...it also explains why you usually post several knives at a time in this thread! (Not that I'm complaining)
A lot of folks seem to carry a different pair of knives each day, so 14 knives a week. I just choose all 14 at once and carry them all for the whole week. :D

Couple nice old barlows today
You said it, David! :cool::cool::thumbsup:

Going with the little KK stockman and the beefy Bull Buster, both in black. :)
Another splendid pair, JJ; I especially like that Keen Kutter! :thumbsup::cool::cool:

...
Have a great weekend folks :) Just my Hartshead Barlow today :) :thumbsup:

Makes me wonder about the old phrase "in the pink of health"! :eek:
I hope it doesn't interfere with your daily activities too much.

Going with my Usual Lamb and a GEC Conductor to start my Stag Saturday
Versatile combo, John! :cool::thumbsup::cool:

Great pic of your frosty-cool scout! ;):cool::cool:

Admirable Alox, José! :thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:

Originally picked this up as a candidate for recovering, but just haven't gotten around to finding someone to do it and it keeps slipping down the list in priority of things to do. May as well just accept it and carry it a little more often. It is a great pattern, and one of my favorites from GEC.

That's a handsome acrylic trapper, Mike! :cool::thumbsup::thumbsup:

Going with a Barlow and a Scout on this chilly Saturday. :)
Vibrant vintage duo, JJ! :thumbsup::cool::thumbsup:

Marvelous stag on your Barlow! :cool::thumbsup::cool:

Empires wax and wane, but your pair of knives sings "Rule, Britannia"! :cool::cool:;)

Thanks Gary :) Words to live by! :D I definitely do more stupid stuff as I get older o_O :rolleyes:

LOL! :D Yeah, my hand is still pink, and looks about 20 years older than the other :rolleyes: I put the burns dressing over the most badly scalded area, but it wasn't big enough to cover my entire hand. The covered area has definitely been damaged less than the uncovered, even though it was the worst burnt. I have just been trying to find some good salve I used to carry in my pack, but I can't find it for the life of me o_O The only thing it's interfering with is doing the washing-up GT, but it's OK if I wear a thick rubber glove :thumbsup:

Thanks pal :D :thumbsup:
