Harry, this year, I used a Companion Planting guide available online from Burpee. Besides what plants work together, like tomato and basil, it also tells you what plants repel pests. Following that, I planted nasturtium, marigold, rosemary, thyme, catnip, and dill in among my beans and broccoli and cauliflower. Only finding an occasional, solitary japanese beetle eating my bean leaves. In all previous years, they were swarming over them by the hundreds.
