What Was the First GOOD FOLDER You Got?

winchester_serrated_knife_sml.jpg

good thread Confederate.... I was gifted the same Winchester above a few years ago.... the Linerlock has already traveled to the far right side of the tang and the blade has lots of play after light use ... :barf:
my first decent folder was a Schrade Uncle Henry Bear Paw i bought back while in high school..... But my first quality folders were a Spyderco Delica and Rescue (w/integral FRN clips) which were purchased simultaneously in the late 1980's at a gun/knife show ...

I just had an idea.

Get two identical Maxams, like the Winchester. One day go out with a hammer and pound one into a tree. The next day go walking in the woods with a friend. When you get to the area near the tree, pull out the second Maxam and tell your friend, "Hey, I'll bet you fifty bucks I can throw this knife and hit that tree over there." He looks and it's about 60 yards away. So he takes you up on it.

So you open the knife, take careful aim and throw it with all you've got. Naturally it will vanish into the leaves and brush. Then you both casually stroll over to the tree and you point proudly to the knife stuck solidly therein. At that point you ask your friend to remove it and he has to give it a huge pull to get it out. Then you wipe the blade, put the knife in your pocket and extend your hand for the money.

What'dya think?

Granted that's not a bad idea, what kind of person cheats his friend out of $50. That's not right.

Now if it were someone I didn't like so much, then no problem ;)

Spyderco Delica got it from a coworker in first job (DOE)after the USAF. That is how it all started..This was 9 years ago...and many many knives ago

Spyderco Delica 3 - VG-10, it's rather beat-up now, but still going strong, and does find its way into my EDC rotation relatively often. It's not the fanciest folder, nor the smoothest opening or flickable - but it's sharp, decently sturdy, and works well.

I began with a little Okapi .
it was a good knife , went thru a bunch of more conventional knives , chinese knockoffs ( hey , a kid of 9 has only a small budget .. he gets what he can afford )

I got flack cos other kids had conventional knives , brass bolsters and shiny blades .. while mine had wood handle , no bolsters , and a dull grey blade but one that cut like a razor

it took a while , like till I was about 12 or 13 before I gave up caring what others thought , my knife was being used for skinning and cleaning rabbits daily , theirs was being used for tossing at boards and stuff ...

I guess Ive always had an Okapi or Opinel kicking around to use when the fancy ones gave up .

I have recently got a couple handmade folders from a maker in Pakistan , yeah , I know pakistan and good knife are not usually mentioned in the same sentence but I was just on a kick for cheap damascus , and the knives actually impressed me big time

Id say this folder I carry daily now is a cut above the usual folder tho it doesnt have a brand even .

Its got a hollow ground blade , that holds a serious edge , like it holds it better than my Opinel or Okapi , and they impressed the hell out of me allready

Im gunna stand up and maybe take the sniggering at for having a knife made in Pakistan and daring to say its a good one , but I reckon a craftsman isnt measured by his religion or the government he lives under , but by his work .

Im confident in this knife , got a bunchmore in for my family , no complaints other than they scare some of the females who got them :)

The first "good folder" for me was (I think) an SAK Super Tinker that my (at the time) girlfriend brought home with her from Switzerland. She had it engraved with my name and everything. Lord, what I wouldn't do to have that knife back in my possession. Lost it in college and I've never forgiven myself.

After that was this strange little Eddie Bauer with a blade, a nail file, and a small pair of scissors. Solingen steel. That was such a great little knife. I probably carried that thing with me for 5 years before I was an idiot and left it in my luggage. That's a TSA donation, thank you very much. Freakin' TSA agent tossed it after I'd offered to have them escort me back to my car so I could throw it in the glovebox. I miss that one a lot, too.

Last one was a Spyderco Ladybug that was made for Eddie Bauer. Had a SpyderEdge on it, and it was a truly exceptional little knife. I loved it because I could use the thumbhole to whip the knife open one-handed, as I've seen most of you Spyderco owners do.

I've had a good knife pedigree, but since finding this forum...it's gotten better. Wallet has gotten a fair bit lighter, though!

You are ABSOLUTELY correct. It was a wicked idea. How about waiting a week, then coming clean and giving him his money back?

It's like that feller on the Sci-Fi Channel, Derren Brown. Misdirection, I think he calls it.

HOLD IT!!!

Why does everyone bash frost cutlery?

It was my first knife (the TNT tactical), got it about 5 months ago, and its still going strong for $8.99.

Granted, i'm only 13, but I read on this forum and know a bit about knives.

I now own a Benchmade Griptilian 551, and it did knock the Frost out of my pants for urban EDC. (I take my Gerber Para fishing, dont want slime in my Zytel ).

But, give Frost a chance, you can do things with them you wouldnt dare do to a Bench or Spydie, not to mention a Sebenza!!!, and then buy another one.

first, welcome to the forums.

second. Frost is ok. i still wont get their products. sure you can do things with them that you wouldn't with a BM or Seb or Spydie or Kershaw. Thing is, unless i am in a really lazy mood, or in a situation where it needs it, i will only use my knife for cutting. i would only use a fix blade knife for prying or anything. simply put, frost is good if you intend to beat the living crap out of them. but then again, a BM or Kershaw or other good knives will last alot longer, and you dont run as high a chance of having to replace them after they "die". if you don't fear loosing them, then yeah the cheaper knives are the way to go. if not, use the Griptilian you got. it'll do a far better job alot longer than the Frost knives

After all the basic stuff like case and Buck stuff, the first really good knife I got was a Benchmade AFCK.

How about the second? After my Al Mar,it was a Rolox. You pushed the blade out from the top.I think it was Benchmark. Was Benchmark pre Benchmade? Anyone know?Anyways, with cocobola scales, screwed on with small machine screws, it was amazing.

I bought one of the little brass and rosewood Gerbers back when Gerber was still Gerber. Still have it. I also one of the first SOG folders and an early unserrated Benchmade ACFK and one of the early tanto bladed Axis lock knives. My first and only custom folder is a Mark Sentz forged Moran stye lockback which i carry.

1) Spyderco Dragonfly, found on the ground.
2) Kershaw leek in black
3) Wanted something a little heavier so I went with a ZT-302 from kershaw.

Why does everyone bash Frost Cutlery?
Frost is a great "first" knife. If I had a son, I'd probably give him an M-Tech because they're a little better than Frost, but as you get older (and get more money), you'll probably find yourself doing cutting work that you're presently not doing. Your tastes also will undoubtedly change. But the old addage about men never growing out of the need for toys is correct. I'm 54 and I still love toys, though they're a bit more sophisticated.

Recently I bought two knives. One was a Frost Delta Force for $13. The other was a Smith & Wesson Homeland Security Tanto. Both were the same length and had the same appearance. The Frost is a copy of the S&W and isn't quite as heavy, but while I'd greatly prefer the Smith, if I were stuck out in the middle of nowhere with the Frost, I could still more than make do. The Frost doesn't have the quality of the Smith, nor the weight, and the blade isn't as good, but it's a big knife and one that would work. If it needed sharpening, just go to any old creek or waterbed, find a nice smooth stone and use it as a sharpening stone.
