What was the worst most over hyped knife you ever bought?

This is SOO disappointing. I remember as a child seeing their knives for sale in the back of magazines and stuff and always wanting one, I drooled over them for years. :(

You didn't miss anything.

I too drooled over them in magazine ads and at gun shows. But it was only after I actually owned one that it disappointed me. Mediocre steel and so-so construction that was actually a bit rough in context of modern times.

It was all about the hype.

I hope this thread isn't closed. I'm surprised to hear some of the knives that people have had issues with. I really didn't think there would be so many Sebenza's and 940's on the list. I'm sorry you guys have experienced some issues, but it's good to know for the future....

I bought one of those crappy survival knives with the hollow handle when I was about 13. Even at that young age I'd known I had made a huge mistake with what for me was big money (about 20 bucks).

SOG Trident. It was my first “modern” knife that I bought when I was 18, so 2012. I had it for a year and was pull cutting styrofoam when the knife folded on my hand. It only had FRN handles, no liners. I was so disappointed because a YouTube reviewer who shall remain unnamed told me it was awesome. Never bought another SOG since.

I was wondering if I was going crazy. So its not just me that thinks Spartan’s folders aren’t quite there yet. When I got my Large 21 I was considering a Harsey. The one my local store had, had frighteningly early lockup. Like less than 5%. With the steel lockbar insert I was like “I will have to carry this unsafe knife for so long before the lock settles in.” So I got the Large 21 instead.

The Metis model I saw another time had a Hinderer Overtravel Stop that was loose and rattling. So I asked the store owner, “hey pass me a t6 this has a loose overtravel stop.” I tighten down the stop and the rattling is no more. I flip the knife open and now the overtravel stop is pressing on the lockbar pushing the detent into the side of the tang making the knife stop after opening about 25% of the way.

Turns out the knife, in order to have a good action the overtravel stop needs to rattle.
I don’t doubt any of that. That had to have been pretty disappointing. The Kranos I received had so many hot spots and just didn’t feel good at all while handing it. To me, it felt cheap. Nowhere near a $500 knife.

It’s easier to be overhyped when there’s a lot of hype. That’s likely why you see a bunch of well regarded knives in the list, like the 940, Sebenza, xm-18, etc.

No one is surprised when a knife that’s not well regarded isn’t very good.
This ^

I tend to get turned off by hype, so am more often pleasantly surprised when I get such an item; the PM2 fits into that category for me. I wanted to dislike it but I couldn’t in all honesty - it is, after all, an excellent knife in my view.

But yes, can’t bring myself to love the Recon-1 for example, to be absolutely honest. It’s just not what I hoped it would be. ‘Tis all so very subjective.

There are some knives that pleasantly surprised me, like the Microtech OTF's I have owned have all been great, all but one strider SNG has been smooth with no issues. Its luck of the draw on some of these things. PM2 I own a S110V and as mentioned as a disappointment the Mantix S110V I have both have really great grinds, great action and the steel holds a fantastic edge. But its good to know there's a different side to the coin sometimes to let you know you arent the only one who got one from what may have been a bad run or multiple runs.

To note I havent seen many Emersons mentioned but I hear alot about lock stick and grittyness. I own several with no such issues, not a fan boy....just never experienced it.

I really liked the look of their Akribis model. The one with the g10 overlays where the bare Ti handle sticks out at the butt. I have seen alot for sale on here. That knife’s main issue seems to be centring.

I think it is probably quite difficult to put together a frame or linerlock because of lock geometry.

Take your worthless Trolling to W&C , where it belongs !

Honest apologies to the OP and this thread.
I was in a sour mood last night and should have thought before I posted what I did.
My second post was not meant to be trolling just recognizing that people are entitled to their opinions.

How is he trolling? You shouldn't mention that place out in the general public here.

You weren't trolling, no need to apologize.

DDR Gunhammer. Lost a ton of money in the resale too. Still, glad I sold it, regardless of the loss I took!

There is no place on this forum for worthless trolling, including W&C.

How about you talking about knives and not other members? I believe we have been gently urged to do that by the mod staff, repeatedly.
