What was your first Spyderco?

Delica 3. I only purchased it because it was so highly regarded and I wanted to see what the hype was all about. I was only collecting 3-4 inch axis lock knives at the time but members here kept referencing this goofy looking plastic handle knife with a strange hole and meager lockback.

It all made sense on that first cut.

am Endura 4. It was down hill from there because my next was a digi-cam military. I primarily edc a military (have the m4 variant in my pocket now), but I picked up a manix 2 (standard 154cm)a couple months back, not expecting to really like it as I prefer longer blades, and it has really grown on me. What a fantastic workhorse of a knife. And a great value to boot!

My first TWO, actually, because I bought them both at the same time, were the Original Delicas (one PE, one CE):

Well, it would have been a Spyderco Pro-Grip with the 60/40 blade but they were out of that model so I ended up getting a fully serrated Dragonfly. Second was a Tim Wegner Jr. plain edge that is still one of my all-time favorite Sydies...

My first Spyderco wasn't a Spyderco, it was one of those $5 knockoffs they sold at Ace Hardware. My most expensive knife at that time was a $30 Kershaw or CRKT, apart from a Leatherman Supertool I found in the dresser at a hotel on a school trip. Spydercos were too expensive (because you could only buy them at the mall, and internet business wasn't around yet).

My first proper, quality knives were a Kershaw Leek, followed by a Woodard Fer De Lance. Somewhere along the line (can't remember exactly) I got my first Spyderco, a blue 93mm Rescue. Still carry it once in a while, but I've moved to the Salt line for my secondary EDC knife (I really wish they'd leave the front 1" of the Atlantic Salt unserrated like they did with the blue Rescue).

I asked for the Volpe as a wedding present from my wife 3 years ago. I loved the look of the knife. I was blown away when I got the knife in hand. I have bought quite a few since. Multiple Mules, Militaries and Para Militaries, ZDP Lum and a CTS-XHP Manix 2.

Native, followed by a Delica 4 SS, Centofante III, and FRN Endura. Lost the Native fighting a structure fire, and picked up the Delica. It's been an addiction since. It's a toss up between the delica and endura for favorite. (for now)

My first product from Spyderco was the Sharpmaker (I still use it ).
Some years later I discovered that they have knives and bought either a Delica Carbon PE or a Military S30V (can't remember). The Military is still in good use, Delica is in accumulation with other Spydies.

For more years than I can remember I've carried a Schrade Old Timer in my pocket as my edc. A few years back I was cruising the aisles of a local gun show and I ran across a feller selling Kershaws. I fell in love with a plain edge, liner lock, he was closing out at discount. After fool'n with it for a spell, I bought it on the spot. Being able to open it one-handed because of a thumb stud struck me as pure genius. Brought it home and decided that I would make it mine by scratching on it. Took me about a week, off and on, to get it where I wanted it. Proud as punch, I clipped it to my pocket and off I went sporting my new treasure. Three days later it must have popped loose at some point when I was clambering in and out of the cab of a piece of heavy equipment because when I got back to the shop I suddenly realized it was gone. Talk about a sickening feeling. :grumpy:

The next time we went into town, I went looking for a replacement and after a bit of a search, found one. It was close to $60 and I really took myself to task for being so careless with the first one and for obstinately compounding the problem by paying so much for a replacement. Once again I scratched it up.

Carried this knife for at least five years until it developed quite a bit of vertical blade play, the rubber grip inserts were worn smooth and the lock had reached the far side of the tang. About a year a half ago I decided it was time to retire it and started looking for a replacement. In my research I found this forum and from there it wasn't too long before I was taking a long hard look at Spyderco's offerings. I could see that they were good values but the way the hump for the hole interrupted the lines of blade spine just put me off. Then the J. D. Smith went on sale and once again I was smitten. From the moment the postman dropped off the priorty mail box with my new Smith until now I've been on a knife buying binge. The unease over spending more than $60 for a particular knife has long since passed. My latest is the M4millie. I have quite a few Spydies now, more than I will ever need, but that hasn't dampened that surge of enthusiasm I feel when I learn of Sal's latest offering. :D
