I'd like to see something in a sub 3" blade with a full or nearly full size handle meant solely for carving wood.

Would be interesting to see what the different makers come up with. A challenge for sure.

Are you going to go with more catagories or keep it to the 5 you started with?

I really wish the vote could be limited to those who are WS&S regulars. I know for a fact there is not 140 regulars that post here. In my opinion, it would be better that way, since a lot of the people voting aren't ones who help to keep this section of BF alive.

I don't know, seems like a good way to get people who don't regularly post more involved.

That's fair enough TG - i'm probably not most representative of "WS&S regulars" and unfortunately i did vote... sorry. I cast my proxy in the "Camp Knife - 5.5" - 9" range" so maybe it can be deleted from the tally.

In any event, i won't be buying a knife for awhile and wouldn't want to clog up the comment section with those who are likely valid potential customers - gotta get my life together!

If this category does win......then TonyM - I need that 4" bladed knife from the bushcrafter challenge back for awhile:p.

I've already done a 3", 4", 7", & 17" blade knives for the W&SS Challenges. Personally I'd like to see something different, so I voted Wilderness/Urban Extreme. Although I don't think its fair that Rick named the category since Wilder is also the name of his company, how about BAC Extreme:D

I agree, to an extent. However, a lot of those people likely haven't realized that we have already had the challenge they are voting for. It wouldn't be as interesting for a repeat of a challenge before some undone challenges are completed first. I just think it's too soon after a necker challenge to hop into an EDC challenge, since they are basically the same thing.

I was mistaken to think I could edit the poll once posted. A few have expressed interest in more/different challnge options.

I should have taken a poll about brainstorming for the poll.... gah! My head hurts. I have recieved a couple emails/pms asking to remove cast votes... but I don't have that kind of POWER... muah-ha-ha. Seem I don't mave much mod magic.

Should we discuss the W&SS Challenge format more in depth? Some see it as a review for their next purchase, others see it as a challenge for the makers, some enter to see if they can make a knife that measures up and a few enter to boost sales. It's all good but it does factor into the challenge line up and categories.

Like Bruce, I have made blades for all the challenges thus far and would like to do something I haven't already done.

FWIW.... It's not as if we couldn't hold a few challenges at the same time.

He is a sly one isn't he slipping part of his name in there. Slick marketing tactic. :D

I should have called it the "Wilderness Tools or Urban Foraging & Lifesaving Knives" challenge.

I vote for wilderness extreme, but I want to see it used extremely in the wilderness.
Pry apart logs to build a cabin or whatever crazy thing enters the mind, but no hammers or vices, just whatever stupid things a human with a knife could possibly think of to do in the wilderness.:)

The bold part. I may be in the minority, but I don't want to see challenges re-done until all other options are executed. It may be nice for the new people, but that leaves everyone else reading over a similar challenge. The results may be different, but we know what to expect when the designs are shown. (Blade shapes and handles shapes and such) When a new challenge is created, there can be a multitude of new designs to be created that we haven't been aware of.

I should have called it the "Wilderness Tools or Urban Foraging & Lifesaving Knives" challenge.

And lol.

Oh my, I think Rick is doing some poll dancing by the looks of it.....Wrap your legs up high, hang upside and don't forget to spin as your slide down that sucker...GO!

Can you not lock this thread, find out what makers are in for the challenge and then have another poll where only they vote for the knife catagory ?

Looks like the EDC category is way ahead and continues to gain ground. If it goes that route it runs the risk of being very similar to some of the previous challenges (necker with wider scales and a belt sheath). If it's going to be EDC it needs a twist to make it special...maybe a gentleman's EDC and fancy it up a bit. How about they need to be sheepsfoot or wharncliffe style and made to slice (I know Rick would like this one, being partial to sheep and all)?

I'm going to make a broader suggestion about the challenges. I say we have two per year, one in the spring and one in the fall. Spring is a "big" knife challenge (>13" OAL) and fall is a "small" knife challenge (<13" OAL). Or something along those lines. Two per year seems like enough...nobody gets burned out and the challenge concept doesn't lose it's shininess. Thoughts?

I also think it should really come down to the makers. I mean, they know what they need/want to be challenged at creating. Sure, they would be open to create something better for everything, but certainly some stuff more than others.

I think that it would be cool if part of the challenge required the makers to try something new. Either a new method of construction, new style of handling a blade, an innovation to the blade shape/grind, etc. Then test the knife to the purpose of the innovation and see how successful they are. Just my $0.02.

I don't think we will find a winner here! Maybe we should find who wants to do the testing and let them choose. It will give them the opportunity to choose something they are familiar with and can play to their strengths.
