What would be your $100 folder?

Benchmade. Anything with an Axis lock. I've been carrying mine for years and it's by far the easiest one-handed opening/closing knife with a bomb-proof lock that will take and then hold a working edge for ever! The only times I don't carry it is when I will be traveling in Third World countries. Then I go for Spyderco. (I wouldn't feel too bad losing a Spyderco. I'd be heartbroken losing my Benchmades.)

Spyderco Para-Military, hands down. It's the greatest folder, ever. :p:D

I'd buy a spydy tenacious - everything I want in a folder (who needs a supersteel folder when you always have a fixed blade?). Then I'd use the remainder and buy a little kat from Bryan or a Kit from John.

tough EDC, wilderness, military use knife

Buck 112. Doesn't have the cool factor, but it has most of the utility of a 110 and will still fit in your pocket. And like the 110, its built like a tank.

As for a one-handed opener, along with the other good suggestions I would throw in the Benchmade 710. Opens like butter, bomb proof axis lock, and aesthetically appealing.

for me it is the Blade Tech Professional Hunter model PE S30v.I love it !
3-5/8" long, S30V, flat ground stainless steel, plain edge blade. 4-7/8" closed, 8-1/2" open length. Blade-Tech 'V-hole' opening. Reversible, right or left handed, tip-up or tip-down pocket clip. Double nested liners with radius ramp liner lock.

Weighs only 4.3 ounces. Green G-10 handle.

The knives everyone has suggested are great knives for @ $100. I will just throw something out there though because if it was me, I'd probably opt for two of the following:

Fallkniven U2. I love mine and probably would choose it over any other folder under $100. Price is about $45, which means you could actually get two and still be $ ahead. Just a thought. :)

i know you said one....but.... Vic SAK Farmer Alox and a Leatherman Juice S2 would be a very PRACTICAL combo.:)

otherwise, +1 on the Ritter Griptillians.

I'd put the $100.00 towards a knife that isn't broke.;):D
No, I would probably just buy a SAK Trekker, another SAK Farmer and another Superknife 2 with 100 blades.

Hey powernoodle, I have a 112 and it is a one-handed opener - either grip it by the blade and let the heavier weight of the handle be flipped open or hold it in your hand in a normal grip and pinch the blade open with your thumb and middle finger. Takes a bit of practice but it is quite easy once you get the hang of it.

Not as flashy as a thumb stud though :(

And I agree, it is built like a tank and I like it much better than the 110.

Benchmade Ritter Grip
Spyderco ParaMilitary
Al Mar SERE or Mini SERE

thats it right there....those are three knives that i can find no fault with

ritter for its lock and ergonomics
Para of its lock and ergos too and the fine tip and steel
and the sere...well...it is just about my favorite folder...

the sere is one knife that i find to be SO usable hell for that matter just about any Al Mar knife...

kevin hit the nail on the head with that group.

The problem here is that the ONE folder would be... two folders. I carried two folders much of the time when I was overseas- you simply cannot escape the all around utility of a basic SAK with scissors, corkscrew, bottle and can openers, and a pen. A phillips head is nice, but if it were one or the other I'd take the corkscrew for social ambassadorial purposes.

Then I'd pick any of the good crop of emerson, strider, al mar, - and that griptilian is sweet.

So, a victorinox compact, and a griptilian, should bring you in under budget.

Benchmade 707

This, or one of the variations, would be high on my list. You've got a relativley small package with maximum blade length, the strength of the Axis lock, true ambi-use/carry and it's within the price range. My favourite of the variations is actually the Blackwater gear 16707. I got mine for around $76 from New Graham. Awesome little knife. The spine also happens to be the best fire striker of all the knives I own.
The only thing I wish it had was a lanyard hole.

I love my BladeTech ProHunter Extreme - S30v & made in USA
I also live my Spyderco Endura4 waved:thumbup:

If it was me i'd try to hunt down a used Manix.
(what ever possessed Spyderco to Cancel that model?)
Or maybe find a used SOG Tomcat (first or second generation) and reprofile the blade slightly.

The new Tomcats look interesting but i'm not sold on the whole arc lock type mechanism.

For new folders (well under 100$) i'd choose a Buck 110FG or 112FG and/or a Spyderco Tenacious!

Leatherman Charge TTi. My military buddies love the multi tools and it has excellent S30V blades on it, including a serrated one for cutting seatbelts and stuff like that. It's about $100.
