What would you do?

Quality over quantity is how I feel these days.
Very true. There’s some great quality to be had in various price ranges. My ontario model 1 is really one of the best folders knives I own especially for the price. My zt 0562 is another one. My whiteriver backpacker also.

Research is key.

Mora or Kershaw.;)

Just kidding but I LOVE those random name drop posts of knives that “I love but aren’t relevant to this conversation but I will recommend them anyways”. :D Surprised that they haven’t found this thread yet.:)

Lots of great suggestions here and I agree that the Spyderco GB2 is an amazing knife as long as you don’t mind patina as that blade cannot look new if used at all. I love mine and dont really care that it isn’t shiny.

A couple of $100 knives IMO unless you find one $200 that you just love.

"Not to sure about steel but I enjoy sharpening so I may avoid the premium grade powder steels"
I don't understand your spin here. I really enjoy sharpening high quality steels.
I may be new here, but I've been a knife weirdo for almost 50 years and know what I want performance wise.
For production knives I have a preference for Spyderco's heat treatment and feel they get better performance out of steels than other manufacturers do with the same steel. Could be wrong, but it has been my observations.
I'd go for a Spyderco Gayle Bradley 2 is you want a knife that has great cutting geometry. It performs beautifully.
Another one I would consider would be the Spyderco Police 4 in K390. K390 is an excellent steel. My K390 Urban has raised my eyebrows at how well K390 performs.

I dunno. Maybe a mountain of Opinels would be the best value and they are excellent cutters.

I'd go for one large fixed blade and 2-3 decent folders

I like this, no need to buy just one knife. When you can get a good quality knife and 2 folders to handle the smaller jobs. Let's see........ Fiddleback production Kephart and any traditional GEC folder, I like the #44. If you to go traditional, a Becker Kephart or LT Wright Genesis, Next Gen, and a GEC Bullnose.

Just something to think about. A lot of these are our opinions, would like to hear what you finally decide upon. :D

Massdrop Keen and a couple of nice SAK's. Pioneer X or Farmer and a Rambler for choice. You'll still have change.

My only sharpening system is the Spyderco Sharpmaker. My point was I would rather sharpen a knife to a razor edge more frequently than have to spend a lot of time trying to get the edge I like on a harder steel.

I have a soft spot for older generation full size presidio 522. 440c, hollow grind, light but sturdy noryl handle (way better than griptilian). New old stock around 100 on auction sites when you can find them. Bought 5 of them and have given some away to good friends. Great action.

If that’s not for you, something from them in 154cm, great deals. Save $100 of that $200. For that, you get great warranty and lifesharp.

+ get Benchmade to send you a deep carry clip if you like, works well on this

Perhaps grab some DMT diamond stones. The little 3" are fairly cheap. They work great, and you really only need 3. Get a blue, red and green and you can get a near mirror finish if you're persistent. But I love to run my knives over the very fine for hours as I watch the boob tube. I know that's not for everyone.

If i had $200, id put it in the bank till i had another couple hundred and buy a Sebenza 21 for life. :)

Yes, but then you get in the range where the Mrs. starts saying why are you going to buy a 300.00 + knife? It gets harder to justify such a purchase, unless you have a nice understanding and she is a great lady, which I know we have a lot of great ladies, some who even share our passion.

I'd definitely buy a ZT 0562 a quick Google search and I saw one for $165.00. s35vn steel is hard to beat. With the 0562 you get ZT goodness and Rick Hinderer ergos which makes for a awesome combination..

Buy the one good knife. I can't speak for others, but at this point in my life, I don't need any more bottom rung cheap knives around. Can't get rid of 'em, I won't use 'em, so really no point to it.

After all, you don't want to be "that guy", right? I always get a kick out of it when I see some thread where someone is selling a high end midtech or even higher end production knife, and some genius intellect is in there like "Hey man, that's an awesome Shiro, I'll trade you this PM2 (in trash shape and base-model S30v), these two Mini-Grips (garbage shape AND half-serrated), this SAK (looks like it was dragged behind a car), and these three awesome Kershaws (I mean, it's three Kershaws. PASS.) for that Shiro! How bout it, broh!" and then watching the guy have to be nice to this dingus so others won't think he's a jerk. "Nah, I'll pass man, thanks for your kind offer!" LOL

Excellent question from the OP. I have $200+ in the envelope right now, but won't buy anything because I have too many knives. I would have really want it and believe the "real price" of the knife, whatever that is, was a lot more than $200 before I paid that much.

I’ve gone from $200 knives to $25 value folders. Just think, you could buy 8-10 Opinel or Old Bears or Mam’s for $200.

Most likely buy a 200 dollar fixed blade that I’ll end up never using.

They cut better too in most cases. A lot of modern folders have pretty thick edge geometries. My opi is a really aggressive cutter.
