What you killing deer with this year?

If I'm fortunate enough to take deer again this year, I plan to do so with the same tool I've used the past few - my Howard Hill Halfbreed 60@29. It likes Carbon Express Heritage 250s with two blade cut on contact 125 grain broadheads.

From last year...

Wal-mart always sells a ton of 30-06, .270 and 30-30 when the deer season hits. Not sure which caliber is the most popular, but I'd venture a guess and say that the old 30-06 might be at the top of the heap. Many folks in the 'know' choose the venerable .308 (7.62x51) over all of these.

i call BS. sure lately the .308 has had bullets made more for hunting the 4 legged creatures than the 2 legged ones but i wouldnt say the "folk in the know choose .308". i am no expert but ill take a 30.06 over a .308 any day of the week. the 30.06 still has the ooomph factor after 200+ yds. not that i shoot that kind of distance in my woods

Bowtech Tomkat 70 lbs, 100 gr. grim reapers, gold tip arrows.

Benelli R1 .300 winmag w/Hornady Interbond 165 gr bullets. Backup gun in bear country is Ruger Redhawk .44 mag, 4" barrel.

There is NO discernable difference in the performance of the 30-06 compared to a .308 on any kind of game. The .308 was designed to offer 30-06 performance in a shorter round and shorter rifle actions (sound familiar?? way before the "short magnum craze.") It's generally more accurate than the 30-06, but either one can be a tackdriver. What one will do, so can the other. Pick your favorite and be assured it will do the job.

Sears J.C. Higgins bolt action (Mauser) 30/06 Spfd. with 3-9x scope and 165 gr. Core-Lokt handloads. Took 3 last year with 3 shots.

Also will be toting a new Taurus Tracker Stainless 44 mag. 4" with 235 gr. LSWC handloads at around 980 fps, good out to about 50 yards for me.

Bow is a High Country Sniper. Yes, it and I are both old. Gun has taken more deer than I can shake a stick at. Ruger M77 in .270 with 130 grain bullet. This gun took out a 250 lb 10 pt. buck at 307 yards!!!

Old Jap Weatherby Mark V in 338 Win mag. Using 225gr fusion. Going to Saskatchewan this year and looking for some longer range capability

I was lucky enough to harvest a 4x3 point buck opening day ( Aug 13th) here in Northern California. I was shooting my Remington model 700 30-06 with the cheap Federal soft point ammunition. The deer weighed 88 pounds on the hook at the butcher shop. ( That is very large for a coastal A Zone deer here in California)

I will have to decide between a Tika .338 win mag, or a Remington Model 700 in 30-06. (both my father's guns, as none of my firearms are suitable for deer hunting.

I have always used my dad's guns, and focused my collection more on military style.

I had a marlin 30/30 that I sold to my cousin. It was basically brand new, with a few boxes of ammo through it. I basically gave it to him for $125 (he gave me $175 for it, but I gave him back 50 to go toward a scope).

I was going to buy a deer rifle with the money, but got married and used the money for something else.

Since then I have acquired two AR's (one a pistol), two .357's, a Glock 40, and several thousand on knives.......... But have never laid down my cash on a hunting rifle.

My dad bought a 30-06 because it was a great deal (really, he bought it specifically to have me use it....but he won't say that.....He is a great dad).

I am north of 30, and he still does nice things like that.

Nice A-zone buck. Way to make good on the opener. I crapped out on the archery opener in Mendocino, but am going to B-zone archery opener this weekend. I'd be very happy with a nice buck like that. And if that doesn't work out, there's always rifle season in a month. Wish me luck. :)

I will be using my Horton Tacoma Trac-150 Crossbow for archery season my T/C Renagade(which I bought a the local pawn shop for like 150$) for muzzleoader season and for centerfire season I thought I might possibly mix it up and use my Ruger Super Blackhawk in 44 mag or maybe one of my Milsurp guns like my 96 Swede or my K-31.

That's a nice rack. It amazes how small bodied deer are in some areas of the country. In KY, that deer would probably weigh at least 125-130 lbs on the hook. I killed a doe 5 years ago that went 167lbs field dressed. Won the big deer contest at our camp that year. It looked like a mule, LOL.

280 Ackley or 7-08 Ackley.....or maybe some with each:D I'm going to the Queen Charlotte Islands in November and the limit is 5 Sitka blacktails:p

Veubent - well done on getting your season started early! By the look of the frothy red lip stick I'd say you lung'd him!

In the early and late muzzleloader season I will be useing my Lyman Trade Rifle Flintlock .50 cal. In rifle season I may take my new 45/70 guide gun along. I bought this for bear, but may hunt deer with it also. If not the guide gun I will carry my trusty 336 30/30 with a skinner peep sight shooting 170g winchesters.
