What your watch says about you...

I've got a plastic Timex watch that I wear all of the time, including with suits.

What does this say about me?

It says, I like to know what time it is.

I asked my wife to read this thread, to get a lady's perspective.
Her opinion:

Plastic watches like Timex and Casio (when not used in the gym):
It screams "cheap date" at Taco Bell.

Citizen, Seiko, Bulova, and similar watches:
I care about what's on my wrist, but I don't make a triple-digit salary.

Omega watches:
I care about what's on my wrist, and I make lots of money.

Rolex:
I have lots of money, but I don't know crap about watches.
I bought it because I thought it would impress folks.
And I have a small penis.

My wife wanted to buy me a nice watch so that I would stop wearing that crappy plastic G-Shock!

Any watch with less than 100m water-resistance:
I don't like to go outside.
Fishing, hunting, and "the woods" frighten me.

Those are her views.

I asked her why she never bought me a Tag when I used to wear my G-Shock and take her out to Taco Bell?:D

I have two G-Shocks a DW-5600E and DW-6600 that I normally wear when I'm splitting wood, running a chainsaw, mowing the yard, painting type stuff. I also have an Orange Monster on a rubber strap, that I have worn while doing the above mentioned stuff. Normally, I wear it when I'm not doing labor type stuff though. I also have an older Seiko diver which is pretty beat up because it was the watch I wore doing everything for 15 years. It currently doesn't have a strap on it, so that's why I haven't worn it.

I just picked up a Maratac compass watch from http://www.broadarrow.net/ Not sure how I like it yet. The service from Broadarrow was great, just not sure if the watch suites me.

1. Luminox automatic mechanical: http://www.luminox.com/catalog/catalog1600.asp--don't know crap about it but it looks cool, was a deal, and glows like all-git-out.

2. 2005 BMW 330i--last of these before they switched to that new body style (which is kind of "French-looking", IMO).

3. Sales--in which I've got a bright future.

I'm not wearing my watch. The battery died. That tells you I procrastinate.

Finally got tired of throwing out quartz watches every 7 years or so and bought an nice mechanical auto, an O & W M-1 from westcoastime. Very good guy to deal with and got a couple of extra straps to change the style to fit different occasions and activities.

I'm hoping this watch, with it's 300 meter rating and saphire crystal, will be with me for a very long time. It has become a friend and companion like no other watch I have ever owned.

Vehicle - '97 Chevy Tahoe, beat up but still runs great at over 150K miles.

Well, my Fossil analog says I can tell time! And yes, I do have a pair of Oakleys, but no, I do not think them the ultimate expression of coolness. That would be handled by my K.O. Scallion. Ride? '01 Accord; four cylinders of economical comfort.

3 watches(of the 11 I own) get rotated...

G-Shock G-100, Skagen (says stainless case, looks like Ti), and Timex (brass, I think)

Wear the g-shock when I'm going to be hard on my watch(yard, garage), the skagen gets worn pretty much from when I get up till I go to bed, and the timex gets tossed on when I have no idea what's going to happen that day(since if it gets busted thats only $30 gone).

Driving a '95 pontiac firefly(3 cylinder, 1 litre, 95hp... but it's a hell of a lot cheaper on gas than my last 3 vehicles), previous owner upgraded the stereo to a 6 cd system.

Start in a week as a "Fabrication Technician" for a wireless communication company up here... nothing like soldering for 8hrs a day on pieces a few mm across.

Shouldn't there be some consideration about the bands on these watches too? Let me elaborate, (1) you got a guy sporting a diver (Citizen, Omega you name it) with a calfskin band, or (2) he's got a OD Maratac 4 ring NATO pattern band. Two totally different messages in my mind what he uses that watch for, his income, and whether or not he knows what his watch is capable of. Like would a Rolex with a British MOD band like Sean Connery's say "I have a small penis" too?

Casio G Shocks bring to my mind memories of really big staff NCO's that might eat me, especially if they wear it with the crystal palm down. Anyone who wears the crystal palm down out of the field is crazy though. It helps if it's one of those old models really freaking small number and red text on the black casing.

I got a '72 Rolex, '69 Omega Seamaster, '02 Seiko SKX173, a solar G shock and a Casio solar knockoff of a Timex ironman. I don't really wear the first two since they're heirlooms, but I bought my grandpa a Citizen Eco Drive for his trouble. The Seiko is what I wear most everywhere, I have a Maratac 4 ring band for it (I have a leather band for suits). My G shock is for when I'm doing something that would kill any other watch, and my ironman knockoff is when I pt. It's nice that the Casios are solar since they don't get much wear-time.

And to top it all off I drive a '87 Nova, which I guess is kinda like a really old Honda Civic. Guess it shows the Rolex and Omega are heirlooms eh?

G-Shock solar powered watch, Sunnto altima, MB microtec stainless navigator are the three watches that see the most use. One for pt, one for hiking/hunting and one for field work. What it says: my watches are used for function and not as jewelry because I couldn't care less how they look. Vehicle, Diesel Jeep liberty turbo charged 4 banger, more torque, more fuel economy, better range (500+) than any other comparable vehicle.

good point on the bands though... how many mall ninja's have you seen with nato watch bands on beater watches.... we have em all over the place here.

Usually anyone wearing a watch thats worth a few bucks has a metal band on it or a plain leather band.

as far as the note about wearing it with the face inside your wrist, I picked up that habit a LONG time ago. The only one that I can't wear like that is my g-shock. I have a wonderful habit of banging into stuff, and I break fewer watches with the face on the inside of my wrist.

I have a Luminox yellow faced Navy seals II watch & a red faced Traser.
Too bad I don't know how to tell time :o

My watches say "I'm radioactive!"

Seriously, I've got a tritium fetish now. My "beater" watch is a Traser/H3 P5900, my "dress" watch is a Luminox 822 (Ultimate Field Chronograph, SS bracelet). I really like the 822. It's a nice looking watch, but it isn't a "pretentious" watch. I also like the fact that they're not Fossils or other crap you buy at the mall for way too much. I really want a Traser/H3 BD Pro Chrono too. I don't know if I'll ever be able to buy a watch if it doesn't have tritium.

As well as my watches, my tritium fetish extends to a glowring on my keychain, and several flashlights: 2 McLux III PDs, a modified Jil Intelli, and in the mail I've got an Orb Raw Ns w/3 trasers and an Exolion. Tritium on a flashlight is immensely useful.

I need a new watch. I always wind up scratching the face on something so I generally don't spend alot of money on them. Can anyone recommend something for hard use?
Is there a site that covers alot of these brands and models at reasonable prices?
Thanks,

G

I love these watch threads because there's always an exception to the rule - take my old business partner, for instance. I never saw him wear anything except a basic, plastic $45. Swatch. Yet he *regularly* made (and still makes) $150,000 donations to his old alma mater. He wasn't making a "reverse snobbery" kind of statement - he said that he only wore a watch to tell him the right time. (And then we'd discuss MY ego-watch collection.....:o )
