Whatcha got on order? (Traditional Knives Only)

a superb little knife and the elk scales are the gear.
my snakewood white owl clip is on way to the great southern land as we type..

I'm pretty curious about the elk scales actually. Never handled any.
I will get it next week when I get home, and then write a review about it. I was lucky to find this very knife in my own country though :)

The Ivory Fruitport arrived on Saturday. The knife shipped QUICKLY! :D The ivory scales are very nicely grained and creamy in color, with subtle golden veins running through it. The color is somewhat washed out in the pics but very nice in person. The knife feels fantastic in hand and very solid. However...there is a problem with the shield inlay. The knife is going to be a user so it's obviously not a functional problem, but this is a $200+ knife so I'm not really sure how I feel about it. Actually I am sure, I don't like it, I just don't know if I want to hassle with the return. What do y'all think? Would you throw it in your pocket or send it back for another?

Nathan, I would contact your dealer and see if they can email you pictures of any others they may have. The shield fitting is a shame, but if they don't have any others which are better, I would keep it.

I was reading your post with a smile on my face until I reached the part about the shield. That's a shame, I would have a chat with Derrick. To me it's the clean, smooth, flowing lines of the Fruitport (particularly the bone and Ivory versions) which form a great part of its appeal. The finish needs to be good for the design to work in my opinion. Despite being based on the #48 frame you're paying quite a bit more for it (I appreciate that it has been ground by Bark River and comes with a nice pocket sheath but still......), the quality should be high.

I hope you find a solution you are happy with.

I agree, Smooth bone, Ebony or especially Ivory should have that sleek feel. Just should not leave the works unless it's smooth to the touch. I've got a Fontenille-Pataud Laguiole in smooth bone, you can't even feel the pins or the decorative cross it's that smoothly finished. You should return it unless really pleased, otherwise it will accuse you, and at that price tag:eek:

I'm awaiting a much less glorious knife but the anticipation is very high. GEC White Owl in funky Kryptonite, hope it's not too bright, where are my dark glasses??

Well y'all are right. The ivory is screaming at me to go in my pocket, but that shield placement is like looking Medusa in the face :( I spoke with Trish in customer service and have initiated the exchange process. She was very pleasant to speak with and said she would send me some pics of the available knives in a few days. Now I just have to fight the urge to buy a new knife in the interim :p

Nathan, I'm sorry to hear/see that issue... It looks great otherwise. Hopefully they'll ship you a nice one in its place.

Hey Nathan, I have been real interested in that knife also. It even looks like the picture on the site has that issue. If I get the chance I would still jump on one.

Congrats otherwise :)

I've got a Buck 309 with a black handle on order and according to my UPS Status it should be here tomarrow, I'm really excited about this partitcular pattern and anxious to see how it compares to other pen style knives.

After reading the praise for GEC on this forum I decided I wanted to buy one. The problem was I couldn't find a pattern/handle material combo that really caught my attention. That was until I seen this one on the ebox. I finnaly bought my first GEC and it should be here any day now. Below is a picture of the knife I bought.

Thanks Kevin. The dealer got back to me last night with pics of the available knives (excellent customer service). It definitely looks like a couple have the same shield issue which is a shame, because the ivory looks nice on all of them. I'll let y'all know how it turns out.

Don't pass judgment until you carry it a spell. It's a bit angular and the clip blade has a unique shape, but that shape makes it more useful for everyday tasks than a regular clip.

I think you're going to like it, FP. The 56 dogleg pattern GEC is one of my favs.

biglmbass,
You are right, I do like it. A few pleasant surprises. I expected the knife to be well built and it is, but it is not as bulky as I was expecting, which is a good thing. For some reason I always thought of GECs as being to bulky for my tastes. The backsprings did not make the knife impossible to open, which is a common statement I've read about GEC knives, and that is also a good thing. The blades are perfectly centered and in general the shape and appearance of the knife is better in hand. The only issues I found are the blades didn't come as sharp as I was expecting, no biggie, and the blades don't sit flush with the backsprings in the open possition, which I think they don't intend for them to sit flush on these dog leg jacks. Thats just a preference thing. All in all I have to say the praise for GEC is warranted, they are very nice knives indeed.

Funny how this works out. I was thinking of getting one of these for my GF for Christmas. She had been wanting a nice GEC for herself. I got her a GEC 57 instead. Guess what she just ordered for my birthday in Feb? An ivory fruitport! Come on Feb :)
