What's a good knife (clueless girl trying to buy a gift)

Oh also, is the RatManDu a knife that most people would have or is it more unique? (obviously you can't know for sure whether he has it, but like you know certain things are "staples" to any serious hunter whereas others would be more unlikely to have)

I'm going to take a shot in dark and say that the RatManDu is a knife that would be fairly uncommon outside of our little circle of knife knuts, LOL. I mean... I doubt you could find one at Dicks or any other sporting goods store, and most people who are not knife aficionados would be clueless.

The RMD is a very nice as well as rugged knife, and I'm sure he would be VERY pleased to receive one as a gift.

I think he would definitely be surprised as well as extremely impressed. I know I would be!!

I wish you luck in your search and happy hunting!!

Man...You guys were not reading when she said outdoors/hunting type. Everyone seemed to immediately jump to EDC and whatnot.

I say you can either go custom, which some people may be able to do engraving. I saw alot of people suggest ESEE aswell. They are great knives from what I've heard, but I don't own one.

I say go Becker. Go ahead and get him any of them. BK2, BK5, BK7, BK9, any of them. Can't go wrong with Becker. They are real work knives.

Ok cool. I'm pretty sold on the RMD. I think he will really like it. :) Now final question. I see in the ordering you have to specify your first and second choice of colors. Now I'm not really sure how to describe which one I would want. Here are the pictures:

I like the first one on the top, the 3rd one from the top, and the 4th one from the top. Oh, and final question, I see the are out of sheaths - would that be something I could buy at a store or does it have to be made specifically for the knife.

Thanks so much, I really really appreciate how helpful you all have been!! I was all worried that I wouldn't find a gift and now I'm super excited cuz it's gonna be an awesome gift!

Looking at the website, it says "many colors available now"...but just below that it only lists two models for the RMD......also the sheaths are all on BACKORDER (I hate that. LOL).

The Rodent Solution is also a great choice...it's just a smaller knife, and it looks like they have several color configurations listed to choose from and they have sheaths available. Would you consider that as an option?

Also, when they are saying for example... "Black canvas with Desert Sage"... the canvas would the handle color and desert sage is the blade color.

If you want to go for something he could really get a lot of use of, I think you should go for either a Leatherman or a Victorinox.

A multi-tool always comes in handy, you can carry them almost everywhere and they're always cool. If he's a hunter, hiker or outdoorsman he'll love it, even If he already has one.

You could go for one of the special editions or the high-end line of any of both brands. From Victorinox maybe the Hercules ($50) or the Swiss Tool Spirit X (a bit nder $100). From Leatherman maybe the Charge ALX or the TTi (around $100- $120). I think any of those are customizable.

Good luck

While I agree with many of the knife choices I'd recommend the Leatherman Charge and possibly a Leatherman Micra to go with it. He then has something large for his belt and a very useful tool for his pocket when a large knife or even tool isn't an option. I know all of the options are confusing and I would actually like to suggest a Spyderco, or Zero Tolerance I think the Leatherman is more likely to be used and appreciated.

All the brands mentioned are certainly worth considering. The RMD seems to be a good choice.

If its not too late though, another brand of fixed blades to consider are ESEE. Here's a pic of mine with the original linen micarta handles and the orange upgrade. You don't need to worry about spending more money on a sheath, because they come with a Kydex sheath. An option to consider would be a ballistic Molle back.

Here's a link to their website. ESEE

For folders I'm personally partial to Kershaw and ZT, followed closely by Spyderco, and more distantly by Benchmade and Buck.

The RMD is unique to those who require a lot out of their knife. The RMD is great because of its universal abilities, and the Swamps unbeatable warranty. The SR 101 gets so sharp its scary and hold its edge for longer than average, plus the design is top notch IMO.
Most people get more than one, so hide your money after you show it to him:D

The first one is tanker gray with black micarta handles, The third is sage with black micarta handles, and the 4th is black with tan micarta handles.
There are plenty of great sheath makers around here:)
You can see my kydex work below or email me at azwelke@aol.com
Thanks

ESEE has several good ones from about $100.00 and less. Izula, Izula II, you could also order the scales with it or he could wrap it with paracord. Or you could get him the ESEE 3 or 4. All come with sheaths and would make great outdoor or hunting knives.

The Swamp Rat would certainly be a special and unusual gift. It's certainly not something anyone else is likely to ever give him and it's a fantastic example of what a high quality knife can be. I thing you made a great choice...and it sounds like your friend made a smart choice as well :)

A few others to consider that a hunter would like are the Grohmann Canadian Belt Knife and the Fallkniven F1.

That place is not necessarily the best place for finding out what would be the best knife for your friend. You have to be careful with advices you get - for you may pay some considerable money for something what may or may not be appreciated. For guys think of what they themselves would liked to get as a present, forgetting that your friend is not a knife enthusiast - unlike them.
My advice would be to go to knifeworks.com or to warriorsandwonders.com depending on your location and look into Ka-Bar, SOG and Cold Steel knives - as you would prefer to present fixed blade. I am sure you will be able to pick something good for a reasonable price. It will not turn out to be too small for your friend (which is a risk with Isula - which is an excellent knife no doubt, but not equally appreciated by all no-knife people because of its practical size), and it will be something that you have selected yourself - so should be more appreciated. ;)

I say get him a folder. So he can carry it around and be reminded of you each time he uses it :)
You probably wouldn't go wrong with Coldsteel AK47 or American lawman. A paramilitary2 would be a better choice, but i believe many of us here already has it.
goodluck!

I ordered the RatManDu. I will update you all once it arrives and once it has been given as a gift. :p Again, thank you so much for all your great advice! I'm gonna see how it looks in whatever packaging it comes in and then I'll decide about the sheath (unfortunately as someone noted they are currently back ordered on the website. But if it looks like it needs one to go with it when it comes, I know who to ask now. :)

Thanks again!

Great choice! I'm sure he'll be very happy with this knife (I know I would be lol) and on the sheath there are plenty of vendors on this forum that could make a sheath for that knife in either Kydex or leather.
