Nah Nick you really don't want to see my carvings. :) I'm very much an amateur, amusing myself with ball in cages, ball in balls, spoons etc. I really like the nice forged knives that I've got, and I plan to make some. The tiny blades seem perfect for an oven-less set up.

Will, Nick- those drilling fixtures are awesome. I'm gonna have to think about making one some time.

Mushroom- we've got these 5' industrial crow bars here at the factory. Wonder what they're made of... :D

send me a slice and i can slap it on the spectro for ya.... i'll tell you exactly whats in it...
Havent had to guess my chemistry in three years:D
boss gave me a footlong length o 2" 52100 a week ago so i cant really complain , besides the manganese was a little too high in those bars... but still ... seems a waste....

Finally got the G10 for the tactical dagger, gonna be finishing it out this weekend along with the 4.5" hunter in Silky oak. These were my last two pieces of S35VN, probably gonna do XHP next.

As you can tell, I can never decide where I want my pin until the last minute. The dagger is going to have an hourglass shaped clamshell handle, with the tip of the hidden full tang protruding as a glassbreaker.

Now I see that the fuller was milled are the bevels milled as well or hand ground. Very symmetrical . Nice looking piece.

Working on a symmetrical dagger prototype design. The weird tabs are for locating the blanks on my fixture for milling. Grinding the bevels is gonna be a bitch. Anybody got any cool jigs for doing double edge grinds?

Great stuff and gear in this thread. I finished this 1095 gyuto this week. Also testing HT's on AEB-L.

While working on my variable speed upgrade, some antlers fell on my head. Scalp laceration. Kind of a do- it- to- yourself project. I have pics, but not till i stop bleeding ;). Likely tomorrow.

Very nice. I'm still learning... how did you make the lockbar cut? What size end mill and how to create the rounded corner?

Ahhh the magic of water jet parts. When ever I do a run of folder parts I give my water jet tech guy a bottle of whiskey to cut me some extra prototype parts free of charge. This way I can test out prototype geometry without breaking the bank or slaving away cutting it all by hand.

I usually do the tips really late since I don't have variable speed and I'd probably burn them super quick :P

Don,
Just a little tip for you, ha ha. Put a fresh belt on the machine for grinding your tips on the fixed speed machine.
The run alot cooler.

^Nice work everyone!

I have about 50 knives in progress at the moment, everything from fixed blades to kitchen knives, friction folders and framelocks. Titanium with Carbide, High Carbon and Stainless...

Here's the last couple of days work, I have a mix of 52100 and CPM3V going. The kitchen knives are 62 RC 52100 and take a while to hand finish.

left to right - my Backpacker model in 3V, Pocket Fighter in 52100, Custom Trailing Point in 52100, Another 3V Backpacker with the bevel grind just put on and last a (vaguely) Loveless inspired twist on the Pocket Fighter.

Ignore the oil! :D

Kitchen Knives -on box rim clockwise from top left
240 mm Gyuto (with blue dykem on it) - Petty (I forget the exact blade length but I have about a dozen going) - Line Knife - Carter Inspired 180mm Wabocho

in box on left - CPM 3V Pocket Fighters... top one is a trailing point variant - more Pettys but these are AEBL - other knives listed in above pic

I just ordered 100 sets of plates, toolrests, and handles for forges to be laser cut, so I've been cutting a lot of bricks for forges. Each brick has to be cut in half, grind the corners off, and then bore a 2½" hole in the middle of it. Here's a cart of 150 bricks cut in half for 300 total. Boring the holes in them will create about 16 gallons of dust. It's hell on the lungs and I'm installing a new "Dust Deputy" to try to reduce it.

I just got the GIB clone finished with 1HP variable speed running off 120VAC. I'm working on a bigger grinder and this one will move home, next to the forge and anvil outside. I just got the work rest installed on this one, new rollers, etc.

Now that I have a working variable speed grinder, I have gotten back to making knives. I just couldn't work on my old grinder any more after having used the variable speed at hammer-ins.

In September 2012 I finished building my 2x72 No Weld Grinder with a 1 HP motor and step pulleys for three speeds. This was a major improvement over my Craftsman 2x42. Today I finished another major improvement: I made the grinder variable speed.

I purchased a 220v 3 phase 2HP Leeson motor and a KB-27 variable frequency drive. The new setup is twice as powerful, much quieter, and has infinitely variable adjustment between about 0 and 3400 SFPM of belt speed. This should help me to have cleaner grinds, cleaner finishes, improved belt life, and should overall increase both quality and quantity of the knives coming out of my shop.

In the middle of the project, some of my "belt hanger" antlers fell off the wall and hit me in the head. No sweat or tears in this project, but blood at least. No major injury, and the grinder is going to be sweet :)

Mr. Mailman was kind enough to bring me these:
Top: a WW1 inspired trench knife
Middle: a userknife I want to enter this years KITH with (when finised in time)
Bottom: a little user for a little girl going to China (GF :D)

Zaph... man I just need 2 of those bricks! :)

The Atlas is impressive btw. Don't think I've ever had a chance to mention that.

Jason- yep those scalp wounds (even small ones) sure bleed like a mofo. Glad to hear it wasn't really bad!

Both- nice grinders! Love it when you guys show pics of them. This is one of my favorite threads to check.

I finished up this little guy today -

Thanks. It's stabilized box elder burl. The pin is not domed, it just caught a weird reflection. I polished it up a little more and added some better pics.

I visited a mastersmith yesterday, Howard Clark, MS, and I'm psyched that I finally got my forge and burner reviewed by one. I'm even more psyched by the quote he gave me about it: "It's brilliant in it's simplicity and output!" He's also planning to come and visit my shop some time, which will certainly be disappointing for him. He's got a 428# power hammer, I've only got a 3# Sam Salvati manual hammer. He traded me one of his knives for the forge and is planning heavy use of it in his shop. I think I got the better end of the deal so I need to reimburse Karma a little. Strigamort, do you need two half bricks or two whole bricks? Cover the shipping costs and I'll send you what you need.
