Bob I did the EXACT same thing the other day. Tip curled up just like that. I straightened it then ground it away anyway.

Sucks, but at least it wasn't right outta quench!

I see 16 sheet metal screws

Been a bit sleep deprived so I missed the obvious fasteners >.<
I've heard of using high quality double stick tape too.

Bob, that sucks! But like strig said, at least it was still soft... could'a been worse.

Even after 18 years of owning this grinder, it blows me away how fast a 36X belt makes whatever touches it--- disappear.

Hermes J-flex.... best contour belts ever.
ukc fri2.jpg

Have to use a 1" wide belt to get into this area.

Pretty shiny for right off the grinder. :)

Hand work, hand work, hand work. Doing the foundation sanding with Tru-Oil to get the Koa grain closed up.

This was around 2000X... is it hard to see why I LOVE Koa??? :D

ukc fri6.jpg

Ehhhh... I was afraid of this. I wanted to have the pommel finish stay in tact so that I wouldn't have to touch it up with the peened tang right in the middle (in my way!) but I wasn't so lucky. No worries... carry on. ;)

One of the last steps on my knives, is masking certain areas off, and putting a clean satin finish on the exposed areas. This knife is done... I just need to take pictures of it, and maybe a video of it cutting something. ;) :)

Will- That knife is look'n fantastic! :)

Posts like Nick's handle and Salem's heat treat issues are the threads that I learn the most from. I think I am going to start posting my mistakes to contribute more to the forum.

I'd spend more time posting than working. :D

That Koa is beautiful. Awesome knife Nick...can't wait to see it completed.

What is your process for satinizing (I think I made a new word)?

Fixturing and work holding are definitely tricky with this thin stock. We usually use a vacuum fixturing system with dedicated steel pallets for each model. In this case because we are prototyping we use quick and less precise methods (we vacuumed down some melamine particle board and screwed the sheet to it). Not the prettiest but it works for this application. We do use double sided tape for some things too.

Ah yea, forgot about vacuum.
IIRC, Benchmade uses vacuum clamping when 3d milling handle scales.
They use a laser cutter for profiling blade blanks though.

Couldn't see it very well on tapatalk but after following the link, that damascus looks awesome Erik!

Love'n it Erik!!!

Nick, that knife could make Crocodile Dundee feel inadequate!

As always, very nicely done.

It did a good job whacking that down.

I think that peened tang was a really good choice for something that will get used that hard.

Do you have to do any finish sanding again after that before you ship it out ?

I reckon you felled that tree in about 16 whacks. Probably could have done it in less if your aim were a little better. :p Yeah I figure that is one hell of a chopper.

I am making my first attempt at a stacked leather handle. The knife is .125 1080. Quickly found out I started a bit big and left myself a lot of material to remove.

I finally got around to putting handles on the 3 paring knives for my wife. They are all .065 15n20 with a forced vinegar patina. I am finding forced patinas to be kind of finicky. I used paper mycarta and I still think she said pink and purple for the handle thinking I wouldn't do it. :D
