I think 120 grit and red Scotchbrite leaves a pretty neat user finish. I think I will pair it with some matte brown micarta.

Neat. Do scotchbrite belts leave a slight convex in your opinion? Is that a FFG down to the handle? Brisa fileguide?

They just brush up the finish. It takes a lot to remove significant amounts of steel in my, limited, experience.
Yes it is a FFG, there will be a tiny ricasso between the grind and the handle. I am doing this vertical grind since I am not convinced about the plungeless approach on full tang not so tall blades.
Yes the file guide is from Brisa!

As far as the plungeless grind, is that because of the looks or being able to do it with a short in height blade?

Beacuse of the short height. It can be done but I just think maybe the blade gets a little too thick to soon in the heel area since the height is limited. If you see what I mean. Here is a pic of the same profile, plungeless.

Working on this Zulu pattern slipjoint with rag micarta I pulled out of ~100 year old gear.

Also just picked up this 3Phase 3Hp 1750rpm Baldor motor for $35. Going to order a cheap chinese VFD to run it and I should be in less than $150 total to convert my grinder to variable speed and almost double my HP at the same time. Just need to pick which VFD (about three are almost the same) and then research how to use the pulleys and such I have to hook this thing up and get a reasonable rate. I have my current triple triple pulley setup and the new motor has a pulley on it already so hoping I can almost re-use everything and make it belt driven

Christmas is coming.....

Finished off this batch and am working on some of the sheaths still:

What was unique about this batch was how many kitchen knives and leather roundknives there were. They were all orders except one of the roundknives. This one is going to a saddle maker in Australia:

AEB-L @63 in .040 stock makes em cut like lazers. Finish on all the stainless knives (except the roundknives) is 220 grit and then a red Scotchbrite belt followed by a green.

Just curious, where did you find that gear, or did it find you?

It came out of a very very old car parts bin. I found someone replacing it with a modern gear and took a stab. I believe it was a model T cam gear. Black on the outside, green inside. You can get “brown” westinghouse rag micarta from particular timing gears from particular makes and manufacturers back in time but they rarely used the color rags. Colored rag micarta is in super old gears of those same types, elevator pulleys etc and is far far harder to find. Some people sell slices of bakelite rag balls originally used for lawn bowling as rag micarta, as well. ($200+ a ball)

Some of it is wild....this is my coolest...looks like a Van Gogh painting inside:

I agree. I didn’t know if you didn’t think you could get it tapered or not. Looks good though! I’ve done blades that size and I agree that they are a little thick in the heel area unless it’s .060” stock or so. That’s the only way I’ve felt good about it.
