Still grinding.

thanks for the summary, it's very much appreciated. could you estimate the belt life in any way? one reason I stop at lower grits is that the higher grit belts simply do not last very long for me, so they do not seem like a good value proposition to me (BUT, of course - I am an amateur, so I am willing to trade time for money more than a professional would).Straight off the grinder. I grind SLOW, but also been experimenting a bit.
Grit progressions: 60, 120 (VSM XK870X) 240, 400 (VSM XK870F), then AO 400, 600, 800, 1200 ( VSM: K712F)
Then I modified A5 Trizact belts by adding Kemet Diamond compound 8 micron on one belt and then a 3 micron on another.
The 8 looks good but I am spending a lot of time on very fine scratch removal on the 3, little 1200 grit marks that I can’t spot using the 8 micron.
I can then hand satin 1 micron.
The results are basically a full mirror at 3 off the grinder. The picture is the first round of 3 micron. There are still some scratches needed to be removed. I will add fresh 3 micron paste on the next grinding day and that should clean up everything.
The steel is M390 at 62.5 hrc and buffing, as I would do with CPM154 or similar, did nothing to the steel really, just washed out my sharp transitions. In any event. I am afraid of a buffer![]()

The finish looks awesome.
I picked up a rubber belt eraser, and realized I've been missing out! That thing is amazing. It doesn't take much pressure to get the schmutz off your belt, and make sure your belt's not too hot or you'll end up with rubber smudges on your steelthanks for the summary, it's very much appreciated. could you estimate the belt life in any way? one reason I stop at lower grits is that the higher grit belts simply do not last very long for me, so they do not seem like a good value proposition to me (BUT, of course - I am an amateur, so I am willing to trade time for money more than a professional would).

thanks, I also have this big rubber stick that I use for that. It cleans wood dust really well, but it did not seem to do much for the steel belts. maybe I should give it another chance, thanks.I picked up a rubber belt eraser, and realized I've been missing out! shiiiiit....
Monday, had this dude. Come rip out my drill press and ride off on his bike.
Now i have to keep everything put up. Make sure it doesnt get stolen. Thankfully he took the cheapest big thing out there. If lost my grinder or kiln, that would have a giant setback.
Its a giant inconvenience to have to move this stuff around to use it now. I literally cant even really pickup the grinder on its own. I mean i can but not really maneuver it i should have a cart getting delivered today to put it on.
Anyway. This happened at the worst possible time. Just dropped all my $ on a rockwell tester so i can't buy a new drill press right now.
