I would not have Austenitised so high but it has the lovely fine cement powder look about it. Has a few curls through it. What you using the knife for?

I tried 1480, but the coupons seemed a little softer. Then again, the hardness chisels and my oven's thermocouple introduce variables that call that guess into question.

Hunting/general woods knife. My usual is to take it to a .015 or so edge with a 25 DPS microbevel if I'm not running scandi grind.

It looks OK to me untempered, I would be happy with that and temper it down, but I am a new maker and what do I know. :) if I was using 1075 it would be for something where the target end result would be well under 60 to take advantage of its "spring steel" qualities.

Some time ago, I ordered a bunch of 1075 from a place I haven't ordered from in a while (I don't think I can say the name now). Couldn't heat treat it right in the forge, so I shelved it. Now that I have an oven, I've been playing around with it to see if I can get a good heat treat on it.

I don't know what to make of this grain structure. Under a light, I don't really see any grain, but at certain angles, I do see these ripples/hills. Not sure if that's giant grain, or just how it fractured.

It seems to harden just fine, 64RC+, going by the testing chisels (not the best measure, but better than the files, I've found).

Thought I'd share my results here to see what you guys think.

I set the oven to 1500f, let it sit for a while, put the knife in, let it get back to 1500 then timed another 2 minutes, and into parks 50.

That looks wonderful!

Well, not actually in the shop, buy on a vacation in the Outer Banks of NC.
I brought along my new shoulder rig camera mount that I built. Fully counterweighted it sits on my shoulder effortlessly. The AF and shutter release is built into right grip. The thing behind the camera is a 7" video monitor with crosshairs and focus assist.
I'll get my daughter to take a photo of it in use tomorrow. It is superior for nature and long-range shots.

To make this a knife related post I also have my set of pumpkin carving knives and tools as well as a large gourd and a flat pumpkin to carve if I get bored. I do extreme pumpkin carving pretty much every year. IMG_20230924_163836.jpgIMG_20230924_163830.jpg

I would try a lower temp with a longer soak.

10-15 minutes. Maybe closer to 10 if you are really worried about soaking. But i often do 15 minutes for low alloy steels. And try different temps.

In a kiln you dont need to worry so much about leaving it too long (within reason at least).
