Finally convinced myself to etch the makers mark on a knife I had laying around pretty much finished
(where I had forgotten to put the makers mark on before final hand sanding in case anything went wrong with the etch )

Just finished up my 3rd knife, a small chopper in 1084 and natural canvas micarta. The micarta seems really mottled, especially where the thickness of the handle changes, and the butt of the handle is way darker than the rest of the handle. Is this just a natural characteristic of the micarta?

That's vintage micarta as Taz mentioned. The dark areas are patina'd or oxidized and would have been closer to the outside of whatever it was cut from. That'll look really nice once polished, takes on an ironwood like appearance.

I've been working on hooks some damascus, knives and some meteorite as well as a folding machete and a large machete for a friend
here are some images.
the hooks in the image are the last of some orders that came in over the past few weeks I had ended up making around 87 of them.

Not going on in my shop...just wondering. Has anyone ever tried making a san mai laminate billet using Z-Max?

Just having fun with slipjoints, made myself another prototype to EDC for a while.
It's called white paper micarta, but it's more ivory/off white. I'd like to try some red paper micarta now.
I hid the middle pin under the scales and did a domed back pin. I think that goes well with a symetrical handle like a barlow.
Pretty happy with this one.

Today’s “Why didn’t I think of this sooner?!?!” moment is brought to you by two 1/4”-20 screws. I’ve been trying to get more consistent. Don’t know why it took me so long to think of this. I went from 4 rough cut blanks to 4 essentially identical blanks with pinholes drilled in about 35-40 minutes.

I do the same with superglue.
I’ll be trying that on the next batch. I always put two 1/4” holes in my blanks to mount to a couple of fixtures I use so I just threaded the holes in one the blanks. I’ll drill it out to 1/4” when I’m ready to move to the next step.
