Yeah, that's when I ordered mine when it was on sale! I've played with other jigs, but his is simple, no moving parts, etc.

I’ve been adding to my library and studying for the last month or so. I’m going to start trying to make some folders this year.

I've only made a couple folders, and it's super fun. After I think the third one, I decided to not make any more until I got myself a milling machine.

I’ve hesitated to try it for the same reason but my main concerns are getting the pivot hole square in the liners and then making a nail nick. I think I have my drill press squared up enough to handle the pivot. If I get stuck I know two really good traditional makers that are local to me. They know enough about my current (very low) skill level and equipment to walk me through it. I’m mainly looking to learn the process and hopefully end up with a decent user.

I’ve looked at table top mills but for the cost of a decent one I’d rather have an old Bridgeport. I just don’t have room for the real deal. That’s one piece of equipment I’ll wait for until I can get exactly what I want.

my advice, (haha get whatcha pay for): stop hesitating and just go for it.

I don't know if you're like me at all, but it takes a lot of fucking up for me to learn anything new. I have to lean pretty heavy on faith and patience, especially when I'm jumping into the unknown, relying on skills I don't yet have. Always totally worth it, even if it doesn't feel that way. For me, at least.

one foot in front of the other, bro!

The process of it all is what I enjoy. For whatever reason I just feel like it’s time to try something different. Folders have always interested me. Not that I’m able to make perfect fixed blades by any means but I feel like I am hitting a plateau with the process of making the style of knives I typically make. I’m also planning to start playing with different steels and heat treating process.

I figure if nothing else, trying to make the occasional folder will help me appreciate making fixed blades more.

It's the tedious and and the small tolerances that I love.
When you try to stick 5 blades in 5/8 of an inch it get interesting.
Fixed blades are boring anymore.
I’ll be happy if I can get one blade to work right…

To be honest the brief chat I had with you at blade show last year was what really got me over the mental hump of trying to make a folder. Below is a screenshot of the list I made of tables I wanted make sure I visited. I had to see one of the knives you posted pictures of in person. I made the font on your table location large in case I forgot my glasses. :D I’ll try not to be broke if we ever meet again!IMG_1266.jpeg

Here’s a boot knife I’m finishing up. The blade is SF100 stainless steel and is around 6” in length.
