What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

So as some of you know I have some .06" 15N20 and eventually .08" Aebl on the way. Tonight's experiment amounts to going through all the knife making motions with something of comparable stock. Consider it like a test run of sorts. So far so good.

I am disappointed. But I guess I shouldn't have expected my third attempt at serrations to be on par with my plain edges.

I can touch them up again tomorrow and see if I can solve it.

The second knife (black and blue) cuts way better, doesn't it?

Yes. Second knife is a mm thinner blade stock, but more importantly plain edge, which I am much more experienced with.

It looks as good as it cuts! I wouldn't mind owning that when you get tired of it.

What kind of steel is that? I know you said, "Wiltshire chef knife total weight loss and makeover program".

It was a Wiltshire chef knife that said "stainless" on it. My guess is 420. If so, it is a super simple stainless alloy that is extremely corrosion resistant, good toughness, and low wear resistance. I'll PM you, and if you end up with it, you can think of it as a budget custom, since I wont ask a huge amount for it.

The serrations on it looks pretty wicked though. Maybe try some cut comparisons vs. a plain edge, on rope, plastic bands, zip ties, and stuff like that. That’s where my serrated knives really shine. Especially my serrated spyderco Harpy for all around utility.

Thanks, yeah, I have some rope here, I'll try it now.
