What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

Video incoming. You can see that I still snag the paper a bit a serration or two near the tip, but in the end, it looks like it's just a matter of honing those ones a bit more, and I think this one might actually be ready to go. I mean, it demolished that rope, so it does what serrated edges are supposed to do. Cwilliams563 Cwilliams563 thank you for pointing out my obvious oversight, glad to have you aboard.

Well shucks, my MagnaCut Prevail XL wants to slip right off it, but the serrated Fisher Scout prototype does it one pull and then slices the paper BETTER THAN IT DID BEFORE!?!??!
I heard these is a lot of silica in rope, and wonder if that helped the edge vs dull it?

Holy cow! It slices right through that rope for sure. If it cuts the paper better, the rope may have smoothed some burrs on the serrations a bit. Hard to polish the inside of the serrations (for me at least). Looks like that is going to be one little devastating knife, especially with the little curve on it. Very utilitarian! Nice job.

Remember these cost me 2 bucks a piece three years ago so I can afford to change my mind on the fly and waste as much steel as I want.

Tthis Wiltshire one feels significantly harder than the rest so I think I'll make myself an edc sheepsfoot

Something like this. May change my mind about to the oak, not sure yet.

Decided to go suretouch on this and half an inch shorter. May add texture still.

I love having all the work in progress pictures of this knife - looking forward to camping season with it 😍

Guys, after tonight's emotional roller coaster of "Yay serrations, Oh no I'm no good at serrations, wait, what, I'm at least goodish at serrations!?" I want to make a recurved serrated fighter, a yellow handled serrated dive knife in LC200N (yes, I found a use for it again!), more serrated hawkbills with bigger handles and blunter tips (yes, rescue knives, orange, of course!), and absolutely a Servail (kinda sounds like serval, so it fits well bigsurbob bigsurbob !)

But wouldn't it really be Serrvail ??

Serr(rated)(pre)vail

Try that serrated hawkbill on a tire, thick plastic jug, heavy gauge vinyl, packing wrap, etc. Stuff that would normally cause a plain edge to bind.

If I may, peaked serrations come to a point with no edge. This point catches and tears. That’s why they’re so good in meat and fibrous material. Much like a slash from a good wharncliffe; the point digs. However, when you cut that rope, the less than stellar steel of that kitchen knife rolled on the serration points and allowed a smoother transition for the unused edge to slice the paper. If you did rounded serrations in which the edge follows over the peak, I’d wager you’d be much more pleased with the paper slicing…

The point on these serrations are miniscule apexes. The very definition of an edge.

I've had serrations like this. But those all have much thicker geometry than the hawkbill I made.

The hawkbill I cut the rope with is AEB-L at 62-63 RC.

If ten days pass from the time I ship your package to the time you still don't have it in hand, message me and tell me your phone number (if I don't have it already) and I will file a ticket. None of this "I don't want to bother you" stuff I sometimes get. While I appreciate the sentiment, I probably have more anxiousness about you getting your knife than you do so let's make it happen!

And the reason for the phone number: Canada Post kicks the tickets back if the receiver's phone number is not on it. They'll never try to call you (or haven't so far to my knowledge) but they will close the ticket just the same. I tried in the beginning, by putting my number twice, once for mine and once for the receiver. Then someone from Canada Post backend would email me and say "we need the receiver's phone number if you want us to investigate, or we'll close the ticket"

Nothing wrong with a little speculative analysis.
