What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

I have indeed experienced DEET related degredation of Cold Steel Kraton handles.

It was 98% DEET in the spray that I got on it... super strong stuff... melted the cheap material in my ball cap as well.

Prolly took 20 years off my life, but I didn't have a skeeter bite one.
Sorry to hear this , but good to know !

DEET story. 14 years old, camping on the Eastern Piedmont in swamp country, mid 90'sF and 8-% humidity. Running around in boots and shorts, fishing day and night. Ticks, sand flies and skeeters thick as hair on a dogs back. Out of desperation I sprayed my legs, arms torso and neck with Deep Woods Off- sprayed until I was wet. less than 30 minutes later my lips were numb, eyelids sagging and very dizzy. waded into the water and got as much as I could off. Snagged a bar of soap and took a pond bath, after an hour or so, things came around and I was fine.

I spray permethrin on outer clothes and let them dry before wearing. In tick/chigger country, I put treated ear tags design for livestock in my boot laces and a sweat band sprayed with permethrin around the top of my boots.

It's been known for decades that DEET gets absorbed through the skin. As it says in the following report:

"There have been sporadic reports over the last several decades of an association between excessive use of repellents containing DEET and adverse neurological effects including seizures, uncoordinated movements, agitation, aggressive behavior, low blood pressure, and skin irritation."

Next time I lose my cool during a stressful situation at work, I’ll have to blame it on a DEET over exposure lol.

Deet is also a great cleaner. We sprayed it on the burners in diesel heaters. 10 minutes and the carbon deposits melt away. Easy cleanup after that. Kept a case of it in the flam cabinet at work.

I’m a big big fisherman and as a kid we’d drown bait in the marsh on the coast. Most of the time the only thing bitting were the no-sees-ums, green heads, and mosquitoes. We tried all the sprays. The one that worked was the 100% deet. We’d liberally spray our face, arms, legs, well everywhere. That stuff melted everything. Most of my glasses, hats, watches, reels etc from that era are all damaged from that stuff. If you had it on your hands and touched a lure It would take the paint off the lure. It’s horrible. It’s also obviously damaged the skin on my arms pretty bad. I’d try to limit your use as much as possible.

Glad to hear it!

Those are ground to 120 grit in the pic, but I have since brought them all up to scotchbrite satin. Left them off there so I could get a workout in before I left the shop. Almost forgot, one of those is the last remaining Otter Scout in AEB-L. It is already right hand chisel ground, and I am probably putting serrations on it as well, with another black suretouch handle like the serrated Fisher Scout I did a few weeks ago. The wife of the gentleman who now owns that one calls it the bat wing!
