What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

At 2:16 PM EST today I received a ship notification from Jarod for the in between run where I piggybacked AEB-L 18 blades on a sheet of .160 that he was already cutting for another maker. In addition to this, Jarod also allowed me to purchase 15 heat treated 8670 blades he already had in stock, and 6 15N20 ones. They are his designs so I agreed to modify the profiles and make them mine before I share them on here.

Amazingly, at 2:17 PM I received an email invoice for waterjet cutting from HAI, who have already cut the blades for the .06" and .120" run I announced here (25 blades in .06", and 11 in .120"), which means Andy will have likely the blades in his blacksmith shop for heat treatment early next week. He advised me that he is getting busier with work now that spring has come, and said he may not be able to get to them right away. My experience with him suggests that means it could be another two weeks before he gets to them. That's only a guess based on past performance.

In any case, that means that I will soon have 75 more blades in the shop to fill existing orders with and for spontaneous builds once those are completed. Did I ever tell you I love making knives?

Wanted to make the primary edge exactly 3" long. Secondary edge is 1 3/4". Blade is 4 1/2" long, or 4 3/4" total edge length (given the angles). Follows the pattern you may have noticed in many of my designs, being built for edge and point presentation, balance, and lightness in the hand. It has an unofficial name, that may or may not become the actual name.

The handle tubes were lookin a little dull so I hit them with the dremel really quickly too.

That’s pretty cool. The two handle materials with the crosshatch carried over looks great.
Almost done. And turns out that Chris is going to set up bat boxes on the property to control the mosquitoes!

Now how do you sharpen something like that. I very much like the knife you posted recently that was stolen that has the same scallop serrations, but I was at a loss as to how they could be kept sharp.

The shape of that particular stolen knife is a real winner, with or without the serrations.

AntDog AntDog thank you so much for the kind words.

Psycho reached out to me a couple years ago and asked for a knife based on the Cold Steel Vaquero blade shape, which I made for him. It has a 5 or 6 inch blade if I recall. This one is a smaller version that he requested.

As for sharpening the serrations, it can be accomplished with the round corners of the Spyderco Sharp Maker rods, or similarly shaped stones. I have to do that still tonight as a matter of fact, since right off the dremel, the cutting performance is rather poor.

Not usually a big fan of serrations, but yours look to be a great combination of effective and easy to maintain. Like you've said before, "nope" comes to mind when looking at others that are overly complex. KISS FTW!

Thank you jlauffer jlauffer . The most important thing to me about a knife is that it will work, and be easy to maintain. If it does those two things, then it will succeed in its mission, which is to improve someone's life.

I want to say an official THANK YOU! to R RSL19 and nugent_crai nugent_crai , not only asking me to make a run of knives for their dealership, Empire Outfitters, but Craig was also kind enough to offer me a phone he was not longer using, since I had previously been using an iPhone 5 for the last seven years or so, which a couple years ago stopped receiving iOS updates, and thus I was no longer able to use Instagram (or the chess.com app!). This new phone will take a bit of getting used to, and I will have to find a case to protect it ASAP. But I couldn't believe how much better the camera is on it. I'm still no photographer, but I'm sure you can see for yourself how much better the photos are:

Thanks again Rich and Craig, and happy memorial day!

bats work great. I dont have bat boxes, but don't need them. we have water oaks that are hollowed out everywhere, and florida bats swarm at dusk everynight. also dragon flies tackle them down well too..not sure if those can survive up where ya are or not though. also great bunch of cutlery ya made.....

I've read complaints that DEET can "melt" Kraton rubbery handles, as found of some Cold Steel and other brands .

IDK , never had the problem myself .
I have indeed experienced DEET related degredation of Cold Steel Kraton handles.

It was 98% DEET in the spray that I got on it... super strong stuff... melted the cheap material in my ball cap as well.

Prolly took 20 years off my life, but I didn't have a skeeter bite one.
