What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

Good evening James! Thank you for your kind inquiry. If you are referring to the slight recurve of the Walnut and Honey Locust knife (the Sirupetite), it is to mimic the recurve of the Sirupati which inspired it. If you are referring to the shape of the Bocote handled neck knives, it creates an index point, and an aesthetic I like in a highly functional and compact design. It is just one of many styles however, and may not be to some people's liking. I'm here to provide a little bit of something for everyone, if I can.
Not to speak for David....

I read it as having little ricasso?
And the knife edge closest to the handle as possible???

I do this too with my knives, I like this too.
It's one of my favorite things about DM knives.

Having the edge closest to your hand gives you more control, and leverage pushing down into the cuts..... Me personally I don't like choils or ricassos. It's a waste of blade length.

But idk if David's thoughts are the same?

Good question.

I believe he means why does the cutting edge not extend all the way flush with the handle, as would be the case if it were to the red line.

This is what I was trying to say. It’s a unique design I don’t think I’ve seen before and I was wondering if it had a reason behind it. Some sort of functionality benefit you’ve experienced.

I don’t mind the ricasso if it’s not huge but I’m not a fan of choils. A sharpening choil is ok but i don’t buy knives with finger choils. I once read that the guy couldn’t decide if it was wasted cutting space or wasted handle space but either way he wasn’t a fan and I agree with that 100%.

I was cutting plastic sheeting at work last week. I was reminded how stupid choils (including sharpening) are when the sheeting kept getting Stuck in the dull part of my blade/folding knife.

I've never understood sharpening choils, like why are they there? It hasn't been properly explained to me.... I think I've sharpened a knife or two, and I still don't get it??? 😂

A sharpening choil allows you to bring the entire edge into contact with the sharpening stone, making it much easier to get a clean edge from heel to tip. It's a perfectly sensible feature for those who want it. I don't want it. I'll make it for someone, but only by request. Same thing with a drain hole in a sheath. Perfectly sensible for those who want it. But I don't make them unless specifically requested, because, like sharpening choils, I don't like them or need them.

This Kershaw has the only choil that has never been an issue for me but I won't miss it when it's gone. I also won't miss it being able to fold. David is being nice enough to make me a replacement choil free. Can't wait to update this picture.... Well actually I have to wait but I look forward to updating this picture 😉

Yeah that choil is narsty. Interesting take on the "drain" hole. So did you drill a hole in the front of the sheath for that? Because that actually is the first time I've heard of that and it sounds like a much more effective way to clean a sheath than what I had thought before, ie rinsing the mouth of the sheath under water and letting it drain.

That's what everyone says, but I still don't understand that? It doesn't make sense in my head.....I can bring the knife right up to the bevel with a stone.

Maybe it's because I don't make super Thick blades, perhaps it's different then?
Like I said, it just doesn't make sense to me... 🤪

I usually blow it out with my mouth...
I'm filled with Alot of hot air. ;)

Sharpen a knife like that a dozen times and get back to us. With a close up pic of the heel. Then you will understand. The difficulty level of keeping a clean edge there is much higher without a choil. You and I can "cheat" because we have grinders that let us fix it fast. Not everyone has that.

David, I have a new interest in owning a karambit style knife to try. I searched and did not find any ringer karambits on your page. Have you made them or comfortable making one if you have not?
FWIW- Choils- I vote no as well. Drain holes, I like as well for cleaning/drying inside the sheath.
