What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

More prep. Freehanding the job of a surface grinder is no wok in the park.

I've often wondered about that...
I can see possibly using one for certain folder parts.

But all the surface grinders I've used required A lot of cranking handwheels....
With them you are usually only taking off a couple thousandths of an inch.

With most knife work, it's not necessary to be That accurate. We aren't building watches.
I think most people just want more toys to play with.... Just my opinion.

I almost wonder/believe it is faster and easier just freehand grinding them.....

Yeah they are freakish. But in a good way, like Andre the Giant.

Sometimes a worn platen pops right off nice and easy in one piece after an acetone soak. Sometimes it cracks up well before any single piece is ready to come off. I can actually still use such a platen believe it or not.

But one piece started to wiggle noticeably today before I got anywhere significant.

In cases like these, it can be a real ordeal. Multiple acetone soaks and heat gun applications and still lots of pieces left.

Found a new way to get the big ones removed though. That’s an unground 1/4” 15N20 Fried Liver Attack blank at around 61 RC.

Once I get through that I’ll clean off the rest with a diamond plate and dress it with 36 grit belts as I always do. Hopefully the next platen gives me as much service as this one. I’d even be happy with half.

Mom showed up for a surprise visit and we had dinner together. Fast forward and yes they had double sided tape and here’s hoping…. Maybe the tape will act as a cushion absorbing some of the force. Time will tell.
