What's happening in the David Mary Custom shop?

As most of you know who follow this thread, I have made a lifestyle choice to ride a bicycle instead of drive, for money saving, and health reasons. Now, when I moved into town, I was given the advice (and I came to this conclusion myself as well) to never ride on the highway. Not only is the speed limit significantly faster for motor vehicles on the highway than it is on the county roads or in town, but there is also rather abrupt bend in it where it would be difficult for motorists to see me until they are almost on top of me.

I used to live in town, and would take the county road until the turnoff where the bridge is. Just over a year ago, I moved to the green dot I now call home, and it's an even shorter ride from home to the shop.

BUT! The county just put up a sign up last week indicating a road closure from August 26 to September 30. I called them and explained I need to cross that bridge to get to work, and that I don't have a vehicle I can take on the highway. The rep I spoke to called the contractor and informed them of my situation, and said it is up to them whether to let me cross through their work site or not. They only just put up their signs Monday evening.

I can't justify risking my life on the highway, but I also can't afford twice daily cab rides for five weeks. So here's hoping the encounter with the contractor representative goes well, and he's reasonable.

If you have some reflective or hi-viz vest or jacket, I bet the road crew will let you through. Explaining your situation and being polite can open lots of doors. Otherwise zip tie some blades to the bars and scream like a banshee as you pedal towards them🤣
Put on a hard hat , carry a clipboard ...and demand to see their permit ! 🤠

Might not be a bad idea to have one ?

Gotten along fine without one in all the cities I've lived in, and here in the country. Once in a while I drop a bunch of cash for a trip into the city, or what have you, but that's negligible next to the cost of a car and insurance. That said, I may consider it one of these days. It's not high on the list though.

My Mom never had a drivers license and it worked out until she got old and needed one. Best to get one even if you won't use it daily or even yearly.

Not owning a car is fiscally very smart.
