I never did. I don't like slick handles to start with, but the kicker is there is no tool more commonly associated with grievous knifemaker injuries than a buffer. My mind has been made up on this for quite some time now. Someone wants a knife from me with a buffed handle? I'm sure there is someone they can pay to do it. Any knife I made, if you see it with a buffed handle, someone else did it.
Yep. Even catching an edge on a rectangular, dull scale slab can be a frightening experience. I use a fully variable speed, 1/2hp buffer so that helps a bit.
I don't do it on handles because of all the curves, but I've found if you sand material between 5,000 - 10,000 grit it looks significantly better anyways.
